JP’s EPL Report, Week 18

theo-walcottWelcome back everyone. Sorry for not having anything last week. Grad School was a little busy but now we should be back on schedule.

Last weekend we saw some very good football played. It started with Newcastle hosting Man City. The champs got off to a quick start as Nasri slotted Sergio Aguero in and all the Argentinian had to do was tap it in. City doubled their lead as they won a corner and Javi Garcia rose above everyone to power home a header. Newcastle cut into the lead in the second half as a corner came in that was cleared but only as far as Coloccini who but a lovely ball into Demba Ba who tucked his 11th goal of the campaign. Cisse had a chance to equalize but his shot flew inches over the bar. City settled the game back down and in the 78th minute a cross came in that Yaya Toure got is foot on and he directed it towards goal and in. City took a quality 3 points away from Newcastle

Everton continued their slide having won only one game in the past 6 as they traveled to Stoke. Everton got on the scoring started as they put in a dangerous ball that Shawcross tried to clear but was only able to deflect it into his own goal. Shawcross made up for it in the 52nd minute playing a beautiful 50 yard ball that Jones was able to get his head onto and past Tim Howard. This game was marred by Fellaini though. The Belgian was upset with Shawcross for an unknown reason and on a set play turned and head-butted the CB in the face. The incident was not seen by the ref but Fellaini has received an 3 match ban since.

QPR got their first win of the season and moved out of the bottom spot on the tables with a 2-1 win over Fulham. This was also Harry Redknapps first victory for the Rangers as well

Manchester United made easy work of Sunderland beating them 3-1 with Robin van Persie adding to his league best 12 goals and Cleverly getting the winner on a beautiful curling shot.

Aston Villa went to Anfield and put on a first half clinic scoring 2 goals in the opening 40 minutes. They added to their lead as Benteke scored his second the Villains were in control. Steve Gerrard pulled one back in the 86th minute but it was another disappointing performance for Liverpool.

On Sunday Tottenham were looking to bounce back from their loss to Everton as they hosted Swansea. The game was quite until the 75th minute where Tottenham won a free kick. The cross came in and Vertonghen was able to put a shot on net from 18 yards out that found the net. Tottenham moved into 4th with this win but the table is quite cluttered below them.

West Brom and West Ham played to a 0-0 tie on Sunday as well.

On Monday Arsenal traveled to Reading in what was guaranteed to be an interesting game. Arsenal traveled to Reading in the Capital One Cup earlier this year where they went down 4-0 before half time. Arsenal came back scoring 5 goals before going to overtime where they added 2 to win 7-5. In that game Reading struggled holding Theo Walcott down and it proved the same in this game. Arsenal scored 3 first half goals that came way to easy for the Gunners. Santi Cazorla added his hat trick in the 60th minute and the game was out of reach. Reading clawed two back before Walcott iced the game in the 80th minute. Arsenal moved to 5th with their 5-2 victory.

Upcoming Games

Saturday

6:45 AM on ESPN2/3 – Wigan vs Arsenal. Wigan has only 1 win out of the last 6 while Arsenal with all their woes sit only 2 points back from 3rd place. Look for Theo Walcott to start again as the lone striker. I have Arsenal winning easily if they continue their form from last game.

9:00 AM on FSC – Man City vs Reading. Man City should make easy work of Reading. Reading looked helpless in the Arsenal game and Man City have been playing decent football sub their loss against United.

11:30 AM on FSC – Liverpool vs Fulham. Both teams have been struggling so it will be interesting to see if anyone will want to win this game. I have a brace from Suarez winning if for Liverpool though.

Sunday

7:30 AM on FSC – Swansea vs Man United. It really depends on which teams show up for this one. Swansea have played excellent soccer at times just as United have done but both teams have a tendency of looking hapless at times as well. I have United being to much for Swansea.

10:00 AM on FSC – Chelsea vs Aston Villa. Chelsea are coming off a disappointing loss in the Club World Cup and plenty of travel. Look for an in form Villa side to take advantage of this tired Chelsea side and possibly walk away with at least a point.
