Lou Fusz Wipke U16 Win Disney Showcase Title

Congratulations to the U16 Lou Fusz Wipke team that won their group AND defeated the #8 nationally-ranked Match Fit Chelsea (NJ) squad in the Red Showcase match that was live-streamed on ESPN3 today.

In their bracket, LF Wipke opened with a 3-0 win against North Carolina Alliance on New Years Eve. The New Year started with an 0-2 loss to Greater Boca United Gold but the squad bounced back to earn another 3-0 win on January 2nd over Council Rock United FC Bucks. The six points gave LF Wipke the group title over Boca who earned draws against the other two opponents.

That led to today’s Showcase Red championship game against the #8 ranked Match Fit Chelsea squad out of New Jersey.

An early goal by Match Fit was matched in the 12th minute by LF Wipke when a ball played back to the keeper was then mishit, allowing #13 to pick it up just outside the box. She calmly dribbled into the box and slotted her shot over the GK’s right shoulder to tie the game. The game-winner was scored in the 55th minute (80 minute match) when #8 sent her flip throw into the box, from a position approximately 30 yards from the end line. The ball bounced once and #17 ran onto the ball and slipped a header past the on-rushing keeper and into the roof of the net from about six yards out.

The team played with fluidity, staying compact throughout and working hard to the end. Match Fit dominated the statistics, with 22 shots to only 5 by Lou Fusz, and a 14-5 SOG advantage. Goalkeeper Kelsey Ponder (St Joe) finished with 15 saves with several critical ones, including a point blank shot in the 48th minute she tipped over the crossbar.
