Mark Pais (Tulsa/SLU/Ladue Horton Watkins) is training with Real Salt Lake. The news comes via the Real Salt Lake website.
Real Salt Lake made a notable addition to its camp roster on Saturday, bringing in former L.A. Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders on a trial.
Saunders was the Galaxy’s No. 1 ‘keeper in 2011 and 2012, helping lead L.A. to MLS Cup titles in both years. The 31-year-old goalie had a 1.33 goals against average in 27 regular season games played last year. He and L.A. parted ways this offseason after the Galaxy signed former Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini.
The Claret-and-Cobalt now has five goalkeepers in camp in Nick Rimando, Jeff Attinella, Lalo Fernandez, trialist Mark Pais and Saunders.
The University of Tulsa senior saw his dream of playing pro soccer slowly drift away as a backup at Saint Louis University. After three years with little change in his status, Pais transferred to TU.
“I’ve always aspired to play professionally,” Pais said. “I was not in the best position at Saint Louis to do that. I needed to get somewhere to play on a consistent basis.”
Pais had only one more year of eligibility, but won the starting net-minding job for the Hurricane. No. 20 TU is 14-5-1 and Pais has been a perfect fit with eight shutouts.
“Everything fell into place,” said Pais of transferring. “I feel I am getting better here and we have a ton of talent on the team. I’m excited for the weekend.”

Pais is a product of the SLSG Missouri goalkeeper program run by Tim Kelly. Recent successes include Luis Soffner and Tomas Gomez, who faced each other in the NCAA Final. Soffner was drafted by the NE Revolution and is in camp with them.
