The St Louis Scott Gallagher Metro soccer program is headed for Rotterdam late this week, for a week of training at Feyenoord Academy, the top-ranked Youth Academy in Holland as named by the Professional Football Coaches (CBV) association of professional trainers (coaches) in the country. For the fourth year in a row.
The Club is taking a pair of teams, their U14 Academy players as well as a group of U12-U13 boys, who will spend a week training and competing against their peers at the school. A great opportunity for the boys.
Traveling with them, with a larger goal in mind, will be 15 year old Wan Kuzain Wan Kamal. “Kuzain”, as his teammates call him, is also headed to Feyenoord from his Carbondale home for a 10-day trial with the Academy. He’ll spend the time working with his age-group squad with an eye towards being offered a contract to remain with the Academy and Club.
Kuzain will pay for his travel and lodging expenses, according to SLSG Metro Director Dale Schilly, in order to stay within NCAA guidelines. Asked about how an opportunity of this nature comes about, he mentioned that Feyenoord FC has a United States scout who attended the US Soccer Development Academy Showcase in December and had a chance to see Wan Kamal play a pair of games. Communication links established, it has progressed to this point.
I talked to Kuzain following a friendly on Saturday to learn more about the opportunity. You can hear the discussion in the audio link below.
To follow Feyenoord, I suggest their Facebook Page that should offer translations via Bing when you see something interesting.
This trip in fact may draw one or members of the Malaysian soccer federation (FAM) to Rotterdam themselves, in order to personally monitor his tryout and on-going development. That information comes from the article in Utusan Online. The photo is the Google translation for those note familiar with the process.
