Opening the season into a chill wind blowing in from the Northwest, the Zumwalt South Bulldogs had the first shot on goal as both teams worked to implement their plans for the season. The lone goal came shortly afterwards but for the Jaguars as Sr. Kerri Morris challenged near midfield with the ball falling to sophomore Kayla Day. Day, the attacking midfielder in a 4-2-3-1 formation, found a seam down the left side and scored with a shot to the near post that eluded GK Lauren Breshears.

The goal would be the difference in a game where the wind afforded an advantage to the team attacking to the South. The Jaguars saw two very good opportunities in the 18 yard box go for naught, each cleared by Bulldog defenders. Senior Tara Vincenc off the goal line in the 19th minute to keep the game within reach and then again in the 63rd a pair of timely plays by defenders I couldn’t identify through the crowd. The best offensive opportunities for South came in the second half when their tactical adjustments and more aggressive play changed the tone of the game. In particular a pair of late corner kicks by sophomore Kelsey Urbaniak that reliably reached the six yard box had both benches urging on their teammates.

I talked to both coaches following the game. The uudio interview opens with Head Coach Sean Baldwin. We discuss Captains Kerri Morris, headed to Drury in the Fall and Kayla Day, a sophomore attacking midfielder for the Jaguars. There were three freshman in the starting lineup Friday, with Jenna Wescott joining sophomore Kailey Anderson as defensive midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Freshman Ally Jennings paired with sophomore Erika Cross as center backs while freshman Hannah Leahy was left back. Freshman Natalie Rushing came in up top as a substitute as well. Carly Ragusky returns at goalkeeper and earned the shutout.

Head Coach Jim Layne offers comments on captains Lauren Breshears, headed to KU in the Fall as well as Morgan Piotraschke who will play for Drury. Head Coach Alf Bilbao was on hand Friday to watch his two recruits open their final high school season. Freshman Madison Schmied and Stacie Muehling earned starts and Urbaniak also is included in the conversation.

One note – I neglected to chat with Sean about the Jaguar’s best known alumni Alyssa Mautz. I can rectify that this evening at St Louis Soccer Park where Alyssa will be playing with the Chicago Red Stars and Lori Chalupny against Becky Sauerbrunn and the FC Kansas City. The match starts at 7pm. Free admission but parking is $10. Please carpool folks!
