With the High School season opening this week, I’ll be on hand at Ladue today for their home and season opener against Parkway West. An opportunity to introduce myself to a new squad in the Horton-Watkins Rams as well as one of their senior captains, Mariana Alisio, who will wear a darker shade of blue today.
For much of the Winter, Mariana has been wearing the Sky Blue of Argentina for she is now the second female player from Ladue to represent her home country. The first of course is Becky Sauerbrunn for the US. For Mariana, born in Cordoba, Argentina but a resident of St Louis since she was four, it is Argentina.
Identified by Sebastian Vecchio, an Assistant Coach with Vanderbilt University during a college visit by Mariana, the Asociacion del Futbol Argentino invited her to train at the AFA headquarters in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the U-20 squad last September as the team was preparing for the CONMEBOL Tournament in January that would determine who would advance from the Southern Hemisphere to the World Cup to be held in Canada this August. That led to training camps in November and December leading up to her selection to the final 22 players named to compete in the Tournament in mid-January of this year.
Mariana began her career with Lou Fusz SC and moved two years ago to St Louis Scott Gallagher. She is a member of the SLSG U18 Elite (ECNL) program and has thus developed completely within St Louis.
We sat down in February, along with her father Arturo, for a discussion of her experiences that included making the final roster and seeing some playing time in the CONMEBOL tournament as well as some friendlies leading up to the tournament. She takes her talents to Washington University in the Fall and anticipates continuing her development with Argentina as the U20’s will begin work preparing for the 2016 U20 Women’s World Cup.
Check out the interview and learn about her families background, the Argentina preparations and play and her plans going forward, including with the “Blue Crew” of Ladue. The team is very excited about the upcoming season!
