Let’s talk turkey in advance of the noon press conference kids…
St. Louis Scott Gallagher has announced its acquisition of a USL PRO soccer franchise for the St. Louis market to begin competition in the 2015 season.
The SLSG owned and operated team has already begun development on a team name, logo, colors, and uniforms which will be announced in the coming months.
The St. Louis franchise will compete at the 5,000-seat Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. The team will be led by head coach Dale Schilly, who is currently the Director of Youth Program Development for SLSG Illinois.
A press conference today at the St Louis Soccer Park will include:
¨ Jim Kavanaugh (World Wide Technology, CEO & St. Louis Scott Gallagher, President)
¨ Tim Holt (USL PRO, United Soccer Leagues, President)
It will NOT include a representative from the Chicago Fire so no Major League Soccer affiliation will be announced at today’s event, regardless of what you may have heard.
So 90% of what you need to know is now available on the website of St Louis’ newest effort to bring Professional Soccer to the metro area. I’ll be on hand today to capture the flavor of the event and get some questions answered that I have and that you have contributed via Twitter and email.
By the way, USL Pro is considered the third-tier of the US Professional ladder, as determined by the USSF. At the top is Major League Soccer, NASL is 2nd tier and USL PRO is next. There is a fourth tier represented by the Professional Development League (PDL) and National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) that are represented in St Louis by the St Louis Lions and FC Bordo St Louis respectively.
USL PRO features 14 teams in 2014, including expansion teams in Los Angeles, Oklahoma City and Sacramento.
Teams have already been announced for 2015 in St. Louis, Colorado Springs, and Tulsa, with more additions expected soon. Through aggressive and deliberate growth in adding teams fully capable of meeting USL and US Soccer standards, USL PRO is building a robust, national professional soccer league in a format that promotes the benefits of regional league play.
In 2013, USL PRO began a groundbreaking, multi-year partnership with MLS that features individual team affiliations, inter-league play, and the opportunity for MLS clubs to field a second team in USL PRO.
In addition to league play, USL PRO teams compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as well as various domestic and international exhibitions. USL PRO is the longest-standing pro league affiliate member of US Soccer. By the start of the 2015 season, it will be required that all MLS clubs either own or operate a USL PRO club, or initiate a partnership with a USL PRO club.
