Beth Guccione Named IWA Head Coach

2014-05-22 IWA wins Class 2 District title game over MICDS

Beth Guccione observes Class 2 District final betwen IWA and MICDS May 22nd 2014

I have confirmed with Athletic Director Chris Jaco that Incarnate Word have promoted Assistant Coach Beth Guccione to the Head Coach position at the Catholic Girls school. She was Erin Hesselbach’s assistant for the three year period Erin coached at IWA.

UPDATE – Jennifer Mers will join “Gooch” (as I’m discovering is Beth’s nickname) on the sideline as her assistant after being the JV Coach previously. I’m guessing Mer’s is also behind the newly active social media effort as can be seen below. Another welcome addition!

Guccione played at Southeast Missouri State, transfering in 1999 from Lewis & Clark Junior College where she was a NSCAA All-American for two seasons. At Southeast she became one of the original Otahkian (before mascot change to current RedHawks) team members and the first goalkeeper in school history. In her first season with Southeast, Guccione gained All-OVC first-team honors and was also named to the OVC All-Tournament team while finishing 11th in the country in saves per game (8.33) on the season. She also made a season-high 14 saves on way to 100 total saves for the season, a 1.75 goals allowed average and three shutouts. She was recognized as OVC Player of the year in 2001, going on to become the first true goalkeeping coach in the five-year history of the Southeast program.

She takes over a program that won it’s 32nd straight District title in what was their finest game of a season, a 1-0 win over MICDS on senior Katie Kienstra’s goal. It was an otherwise unsettled season (9-8-1), not up to standards at the Northside school. Here’s hoping that this is enough of a change for the Red Knights.

The team will likely end up in Class 3 in the new 4-Class alignment coming in 2014-2015. Class 3 will likely include Ursuline, Visitation, Rosati-Kain and St Dominic.

Awesome job Beth! I played volleyball, soccer, and softball with Beth in grade school at St Sabina catholic church and she was the best on our team! She will do a phenomenal job and wish her the best!
