The Varsity Showcase event kicks off Thursday, it runs through Saturday, and will include a pair of Showcase games on Friday evening to recognize individual players following the first three games.

There are 36 teams this year, all boys, and includes dual teams entered by Rockhurst, Eureka, Howell and Zumwalt South (the hosts). The event includes the Class 3 Champion and Finalist from last Fall, Rockhurst and Timberland, as well as nine teams who have won a District title in the past two years – Rockhurst, Timberland, Eureka, Rock Bridge, Perryville, Howell North, Parkway West, Holt and Liberty.

There are seven teams from Eastern Kansas – Shawnee Mission NW, Shawnee Mission East, Shawnee Mission North, Washburn Rural and Seaman (both Topeka), Olathe NW and Hutchinson. Jerseyville is representing Illinois this year.

All in all, it has the makings of some competitive matches. A few I’ve highlighted for consideration include the Rockhurst White squad playing Timberland in a “rematch” of the Class 3 Final on Friday morning at 8am. Eureka Purple will face the Rockhurst Blue squad on Friday at 3:30 pm while Lafayette and Rock Bridge face off at the same time. Liberty has won Districts the last two years and they’ll face Eureka White on Thursday at 5:30 pm and Zumwalt South Friday at 5:00 pm. Saturday morning will feature Group winners.

Teams have been split up into eight groups with six of them carrying four teams, two carrying six teams. The small groups will play a round robin format leading up to games on Saturday morning that will feature games between groups based upon results in the group play (A1 vs B1, A2 vs B2, etc). The two larger groups will face off in additional group games.

Games are being played at the O’Fallon Sports Park in O’Fallon, MO. There are NO BLEACHERS FOR SPECTATORS and ONLY SOME FIELDS HAVE PLAYER BENCHES. Coaches, players, and spectators may want to bring their own portable chairs. Directions to the Sports Park & Fields.
