CBC and Chaminade Open with Big Wins

2014-08-23 Chaminade wins 3-0 at home vs SLUH in Metro Catholic Conference opener

CCP Red Army at halftime of Home Opener

Metro Catholic Conference soccer play opened early this year with the Chaminade Red Devils hosting the SLUH Jr Billiken’s in the first game for both squads. The Red Devils won with a brace by Kenny Massa in the first half and a third from Dominic Vella to open the second half.

Massa owned the Jr Billiken’s six yard box, scoring both goals via headers. The first came in the 6th minute off a free kick sent in from just outside the center circle (picture). The second, in the final minute of the first half, came off of Anthony Aegerter’s corner kick (picture). Vella scored his 30 seconds into the first half when CCP’s pressure created a take-away in the box that Vella pounced on and finished. The celebration on the near sideline with the CCP Red Army (picture) almost sent the group featured in the picture above to the Parking lot for the remainder of the match. The Center gave them a warning but it’s worth noting for other supporters as we go forward.

The Metro Catholic Conference is changed dramatically this year. With the move by MSHSAA to start play a week earlier this year, traditional schedules were impacted. The two big tournaments – the CYC Guelker Tourney in late September and the Gateway Classic the first weekend in October – did not shift forward to match the MSHSAA shift. So games otherwise scheduled for weeks 5 and 6 are now moved forward to allow for participation in the tournaments. Therefor, MCC play will be completed in September this Fall.

By the way, the Metro Catholic Conference Minute will be returning for the Third year. My writer is gathering the details for the first report which you can expect soon.

In Chesterfield, the CBC Cadets hosted Jefferson City and also earned an easy 3-0 win. Freshman Nick Dempster, who looks to crack the starting lineup for the Cadets this Fall, opened his account with a goal in the match.

The Vianney Golden Griffins opens with a game at Mehlville this evening, 7pm start. UPDATE – Vianney wins their opener 2-0 against Mehlville. Goals by Jack Gallo and Will Klages.

The DeSmet Spartans open at Howell Central on Tuesday at 7pm.
