Missouri State women’s soccer junior goalkeeper Jessica Perry was named the Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Aug. 26) in its initial weekly notebook. The award is Perry’s second career MVC Goalkeeper of the Week accolade after notching the honor on October 15, 2013.
Perry was outstanding in the Bears’ first two matches of the regular season. She made six saves in the season opener at UMKC on Friday, but suffered the loss in a 1-0 final.
She rebounded on Sunday and stood tall between the posts, recording her first shutout of the year. She compiled six more saves against Utah State including a spectacular diving save in the 39th minute to push an Aggies’ shot just wide of the post. It was the fifth shutout of Perry’s MSU career and keeps the Bears defense unblemished at the new Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium, having not allowed a single goal at home in three matches (two were exhibitions).
Perry’s 12 saves lead all Valley keepers and her 0.50 goals against average is the best among keepers with more than one match of action.
Missouri State will head to Tulsa, Okla., for the Holiday Inn City Center Tulsa Invitational beginning Friday. MSU will face host Tulsa on Friday night before wrapping up the weekend against Oral Roberts on Sunday. The Bears return home to Allison South on Sunday, September 7 for a 1:00 p.m. tilt against Arkansas State.
