I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie King (audio below) earlier this week while she was home visiting family. Julie is one of four area players competing in the National Womens Soccer League (NWSL), a list that includes Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City/Ladue), Alyssa Mautz (Chicago Red Stars/Ft. Zumwalt West) and most recently, Granite City’s Tessa Gravilsky-Florio who joined the Houston Dash from Sweden for the 2016 season although she is not currently on their roster. King will begin her sixth year as a professional in February when pre-season camp will open for the Boston Breakers, her home for her entire professional career.
King represented Nerinx Hall High School in both soccer and basketball during her prep career from 2004 to 2008, where Brian Haddock was her soccer coach (a position he continues still). She was a wing-midfielder for St. Louis SC (now St. Louis Scott Gallagher SC) under Gary Miller and helped her club team advance to the Region II regional Finals five out of the six years they competed, winning in 2003 and 2005. They captured the U15 Girls National Championship in 2005, the last St. Louis team to reach this pinnacle.
In High School, King was a 2005 All-Metro honorable mention, 2006 Second Team All-Metro, 2007 All-Midwest honorable mention, a 2007 First Team All-Metro, First Team All-Conference and First Team All-State, 2007 All-Midwest honorable mention, 2008 First Team All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference. She was a second team All-Conference selection in basketball in 2008 and 2007.
She went on to compete at Auburn between 2008-2011, helping the team win it’s first SEC Title her senior year as a co-captain. Older sister Caitlin played soccer at Auburn from 2006-09 as well. From the Auburn website
Auburn took back the lead with 26:39 left in the second half behind a great series of passes that started with a simple touch from Frierson to Julie King, one of the SEC Co-Defensive Players of the Year. King found a streaking Ana Cate on a cross that the junior nestled in the back of the net for the game winner, 3-2.
Interview with Julie King, Boston Breakers defender on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Kaldi’s in Kirkwood. Julie is an alum of Nerinx Hall (2008) and Auburn (2012) and joined the Breakers that Summer.
It’s an enlightening conversation. 45 minutes long but well worth a listen for any young women aspiring for a professional career. There were peaks and there were valleys at every level and Julie openly shares the impact and the effort needed to reach the highest levels. Enjoy!
