Word has arrived that Dave Robben has retired from his Head Coaching position with the Oakville Tigers after 39 seasons. He was recognized Thursday following the teams 1-0 win over Lafayette (in PKs), his last regular season game at home.

The team will play Eureka this evening at Eureka. Their record is (updated 5/13) 11-5-2 which has earned them the top seed in the Class 4 District 7 playoffs that begin Wednesday May 17 at Oakville. The Tigers will face off against #4 Fox at 7pm, following the 5pm match between #2 Lindbergh and #3 Mehlville.

Per the Missouri State High School Coaches Association site, Robben had a 1112-515-141 combined record coming into the season. He now stands at (updated 5/13) 1123-520-143 with at least two games remaining. He has coached the girls team for 39 seasons, 35 with the boys.
The picture I used to highlight this story is from Robben’s 1000th career win, at the beginning of the 2012 season against Northwest. While I’ve covered a number of Oakville matches I apparently didn’t get a recent photo. Who knew the guy would ever retire, eh Dave 🙂

He has been coaching the boys team since 1982 and the girls team since 1978. During his tenure, the Oakville Soccer program has an overall record of 1069-461-137 (boys: 502-265-80 and girls: 567-196-57). Under Coach Robben, the boys soccer program has won district titles in 1988-1991, 1993, 1995, 2000-2002, 2006, and 2011, and sectional titles in 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 2000, 2001, and 2011. The boys soccer program won the MSHSAA State Championship in 1976 under Coach Jim Bokern and in 2000 under Coach Robben, along with 2nd place finishes in 1989, 2000, 2001, and 2011. The girls won the Missouri State Championship in 1991 in addition to being Finalists in 1984 and 1990. The girls soccer team also won the St. Louis Metro Championship in 1983 under Coach Robben. He recorded his 1,000 overall victory on March 27, 2012 with a 3-1 win over Northwest High School. Oakville Boys Soccer is the only public school to win 2 state titles, with one in 1976 under Jim Bokern and another in 2000 with Coach Robben. Coach Robben has 57 years of coaching experience and has won several coaching awards. In 1991, he was named National Soccer Coaches Association of America Midwest Region Coach of the Year for Secondary Schools-Girls. In 1992, he won the St. Louis Storm Indoor Soccer Team High School Coaching Award. He was presented the Jimmy Dunn High School Coaching Award by Ebbie Dunn in 1997. He was also named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Missouri State Coach of the Year for High School-Boys Division One in 2000. In 2001, he also was named the National Federation of Coaches Association Boys Soccer Coach of the Year for the State of Missouri. He won the Steve Krause Twelfth Man Award in 2006, and was named to the Missouri State High School Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013. Prior to coaching, Coach Robben played for 22 years. He attended St. Louis University and played soccer for 2 years before changing to Harris Stowe College for 1 year. He was a member of the 1961 NCAA Finalist St. Louis University team. As a player, he was a St. Louis League All Star in 1961, 1963, and 1964, and an All-Conference and All-American Goalkeeper in 1962. He was inducted into the St. Mary’s Hall of Fame in 1998 and the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 2000.
