High School soccer playoffs began last week for Illinois small schools and a few Missouri Districts but this is the big week, usually my busiest during the season. I’m still sorting out my schedule for the week as I look for interesting games that may not draw the attention of the P-D this week when they bring out their freelancers.
Tonight that means Lutheran North hosting the Class 2 District 4 tournament where they are the favorite. I’ll be catching #2 McCluer South Berkley vs #3 Jennings. I suspect you’ll see reports from St. Joe in Class 4 where #2 Nerinx vs #3 Cor Jesu will eliminate a MWAA team, Belleville West in Class 3A, with four SWC teams including #2 Edwardsville, as well as Kennedy in Class 1 District 4. The Catholic school is hosting their final games as the school prepares to close down shortly. I suspect they’ll get past Barat but covering a win is always more fun.
There are two Class 3A Regionals (Districts in Missouri parlance) on the East side, featuring the seven members of the Southwest Conference. The first set of games begin today at Belleville West, a change from the original schedule that had them playing on Tuesday. #1 seeded Collinsville travels to Quincy tomorrow for their opening match while #4 Granite City v #5 Alton will be played at Granite City on Wednesday, leading to their Final in Quincy on Friday. Although who knows, maybe IHSA will move the Final to the Metro area if Collinsville wins as expected, to play the Granite City/Alton winner. That’s all I’ll comment on a travel situation that has Kahok fans in a bit of an uproar. Much ado about nothing but fans must banter.
ILLINOIS 3A Sub-Regional at Belleville West HS
16:30 – (2) Edwardsville vs. (8) O’Fallon, 2-0 EHS goals by Abigail Crabtree and Paityn Schneider
18:30 – (3) Belleville West vs. (7) Belleville East, 2-0 BW goals by Gabby Holtrop and Taylor Mathenia
Regional Final – Edwardsville v Belleville West, on May 19
As noted above, the second match will see one of the six MWAA programs season end. Nerinx is the favorite, ranked #2 in the State. Cor Jesu is at #13 in the final poll and coming off a trip to the Final 4 last season but are currently at 7-8-2 after a three game losing streak to end the season against Class 3 foes St. Dominic, Visitation and Incarnate Word. All by a single goal and with seeding complete, the final games are not always a good yardstick. Regardless, they’ll need a strong game to get past Nerinx today. The match April 3rd at Nerinx was a 3-1 for the Markers.

Arguably the most interesting Class this season with eight of the Top 10 in the State rankings from the area. #9 Visitation is hosting the District 4 playoffs and the odds are they’ll face #5 Westminster in the Final Wednesday. In District 9, Washington is host and top seed but it is #10 Union and #12 Rolla that have the State Coaches attention. The winner will likely play Bolivar in the Quarterfinals for a trip to State so the stakes are high.

There are two Final 4 spots available for teams coming out of St. Louis and Southeast Missouri with #1 state ranked St. Charles West the favorite to grab the spot available for Districts 5-8. That includes four time defending State Champions Duchesne and I suspect Lutheran North and Borgia. The Warriors are in a class by themselves and after defeating Duchesne 4-0 two weeks ago for their first win since 2014 against the champs, the likely rematch in the Quarterfinals will be fraught with emotion.
