The 2017 St. Louis Varsity Soccer Showcase opens Thursday at the Lou Fusz Soccer complex in Creve Coeur. Featuring 48 high school boys teams from across the state, including a half dozen from the Kansas City area who come regularly, it’s an opportunity to do team bonding while playing three games over three days (Thursday, Friday and Saturday).
Included in this year’s event are State Champions Rockwood Summit, as well as Final 4 participants Ft. Zumwalth South (hosts of the event), Rockhurst, Rock Bridge and Howell North as well as Shawnee Mission East who reached the 6A Final 4 in Kansas. Plenty of Sectional (or Quarterfinal) qualifiers as well including Howell, Eureka, Jackson, Glendale, Washington and Pattonville. For the full list, visit the St Louis Varsity Showcase Website
I’ve personally enjoyed the event as an early look at area teams as well as programs like Rockhurst (Class 4 Finalist in 2016) and Shawnee Mission East (Class 6A Final 4 in 2016). Two years ago I caught Perryville who stood out as an organized and disciplined team with some good talent. Good enough to capture the Class 2 title that November!
I suggest you come out Friday in the late afternoon if you have one chance. The day ends with a pair of Showcase Games at 5:30 pm that pull together four teams of ‘All-Stars’. A look at last year’s list shows that the vast majority of this year’s seniors went on to Regional and All-State recognition as well.
