The Swope Park Rangers (12-5-3, 3rd in West) battled to an entertaining 0-0 draw with rivals Saint Louis FC (6-8-5, 13th in East) on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Fenton, Missouri. SPR goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod – who was making his professional debut in the match – saved a second-half penalty to preserve the point for his side. The game was one that will likely earn favor from the St. Louligan’s supporters group as both the work rate and quality of play were an improvement over recent outings. The problem may be that the team has stepped up against quality opponents such as the Chicago Fire, an 0-1 loss to the MLS-side in Open Cup play, but followed that with three straight losses, part of an 0-5-1 stretch. SPR sit in third in the Western Conference and Head Coach Preki noted following the match that he considers them the best side in the Western Conference.
Any hope of making the playoffs has to come from consistent play in the next seven matches, five of which are against sides that are in eighth (Tulsa, twice) or lower. If you don’t earn points against Pittsburgh, Toronto and Ottawa, well…
