The SLU Billikens earned bragging rights in the annual match against the SIUE Cougars tonight. They opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when freshman Megan Nixon stepped into fellow freshman Annabelle Copeland’s (Marquette Explorers) ball through the six yard box, from a corner kick, to take the lead into halftime. It was bracketed by two excellent chances for the Cougars who saw freshman Andrea Frerker’s (Collinsville) cross into the box slide past two attempts. With less than a minute remaining in the half, MacKenzie Litzsinger (Summit) knocked a header down into the ground that seem destined for the net but Senior Mary Niehaus (Nerinx Hall) stood her ground and tipped it up off the crossbar before collecting it.

When the Billikens came out and scored a pair of goals in the 50th and 55th minute – Maddie Pokorny netted her team-high-tying third goal of the season and Lindsay Sands collected her first of the year. Alyssa Seitzer recorded her team-high fourth assist on Pokorny’s goal, while Evie Lavelle assisted Sands – that put the game out of reach.
SLU came out strong to start the game showing some wonderful ball movement and created some opportunities that the Cougar defense was able to snuff. It took about 15 minutes before SIUE were able to put their offense into action as they adjusted to the Billikens earlier efforts to close off the passing lanes, showing that someone did their homework on the Cougars tendencies. A key to the change was freshman Andrea Frerker’s fine work on the left wing. Her ability to hold the ball under pressure was key and more importantly she initiated the attack with her turns.
The second half goals came from defensive breakdowns, items that Head Coach Derek Burton will need to work on, like coming off the line after a corner kick. SLU showed how opportunistic they can be and the ball movement continued even as Coach Katie Shields went deep to her bench. It was the third straight win for the Billikens against SIUE, with 2014 a year off from the home and away series, following SIUE’s 1-0 win at Hermann Stadium in 2013.
