MRL soccer continued Sunday at the Lou Fusz complex where Missouri Rush Bozesky faced the Milwaukee Kickers (aka MKSC) in U19 girls play. It was a tight game that finished in a scoreless draw. It was an enjoyable match to cover as the intelligence and experience of both teams was on display.

Rush’s best opportunities came in the final 20 minutes as they were able to maintain their pressure defense and get into the box. A penalty kick earned was unfortunately turned away and several corner kicks were cleared from the crowd after they were unable to get a clear shot on the initial opportunity. In the final minute, a throw-in that reached the six yard box bounced and was only just tipped off the crossbar before being cleared.
A pair of draws this weekend, with a 1-1 record last weekend as the season kicked off in Rockford, has the team comfortably in the top half of the table. They travel to Indiana this weekend which will wrap up their season except for one game, a local derby with the AFA Fillies squad that are the defending U18 State Champions. That game will be played October 22nd at St. Dominic and comes one week prior to the State Cup pool play.
UPDATE – as I was reminded by a reader, the U19 Women play State Cup in the Summer with the High School Age boys and younger girls age groups. With all of the other AFA Fillies teams registered I should have caught that but glad to see someone is reading this stuff 🙂
Looking at the State Cup website it would appear that the AFA Fillies are not returning to defend their title, since there are no U19 girls teams that have applied. MYSA may reach out to resolve this so that a team can play at the Regional tournament. Rush will drop down to play as U18’s (2000) with only five ’99s on the current squad.
