Pattonville started out strongly getting down into the offensive end for a pair of corner kicks but they were unable to get an opening goal. South showed patience and moved the ball from side to side while looking for an opening that Hunt finally exploited in the 17th minute. Coming down the right side, he found a seam working with Appelbaum before firing to the far post from inside the box.
The Pirates were working hard to equalize, led by Sr. captain Eric Barcenas from his central midfield role, paired with Sr. Juan Beltran and So. Nick Derluth. The team got a goal saving clearance in the 29th when So. Kyle Campbell cleared a direct kick off the line from his position on the post. He followed that play with a 50 yard run to support the counter attack and continued to show good game intelligence throughout the match from his right midfield position.
South showed a lot of scoring options in this game with Jr. Kevin Ovalle a skilled and aggressive forward up top, supported alternately by Hunt and Appelbaum on the right and Nickolus Meyers on the left, while Carter Reis and Luke Davis pulled the strings in the middle.
South moved to 12-5 with the win (now 12-6 after a 1-2 loss at Seckman yesterday in the rain) and face a difficult stretch of Conference games to end the season, including Oakville, Lafayette and Lindbergh along with Summit. Things will not get easier in District 7 as they will likely open against either Vianney or Kirkwood, both ranked foes.
Pattonville has league games against Webster Groves (today) and Kirkwood coming up, finishing against Ladue. The Pirates will then likely open against either Hazelwood Central or McCluer North in District play and likely face Hazelwood West in the Final, a team they lost to 0-3 in early September. They won that game 1-0 last year after also losing that early game by the same 0-3 result. Have to love October soccer!
