In a return to his roots, Head Coach Jason Sellers (13 years at Hazelwood West) brought his Pattonville Pirates to Hazelwood West and got a 4-2 win with important District seeding implications. The Pirate’s opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Madison Utley scored, finishing a ball that wasn’t cleared by Hazelwood West. That came five minutes after Wildcat’s freshman Megan Larson shot from the left side bounced off the far upright before being cleared.

The Wildcats leading scorer, Hannah Friedrich, got a pair of goals in the match despite man-marking by Kendall Battle of Pattonville. Friedrich, who helped lead the AFA Fillies to the U18 State Cup title last November over the defending champion FCKC Juniors squad they had never beaten, had to work very hard against Battle who can match anyone in town with her pace and is part of the Lou Fusz Elam team that is ranked #1 right now in the U17 (2000) age group. Her first was a classic team goal, a ball won in the defensive end by Sr. Mackenzie Brown, sent up the line and collected and held by freshman McKayla Giles who’s square ball to Sr. Samanatha Eckert was one-timed over the defensive line. Friedrich broke through, won the ball on the left side and beat a defender to turn to goal. Her shot, as two defenders converged, found the far side netting to tie the match. A thing of beauty, especially by Eckert who showed her intelligence throughout the match.
