The PHL Soccer Tournament opened on Monday with 12 teams playing for the Title which will be contested at Gateway STEM on Saturday, April 1st at 5pm. It will feature TBD. The full schedule of game results are listed below.
I caught the 2nd round match between hosts Soldan Tigers and Northwest Hornets. The Tigers are coming off of their District title last May in Class 2 District 4, their second straight since the move to four classes. Prior to that they were Class 1 for two years, after moving from Class 2, during the three class era.

It was an entertaining game, lacking the cynicism of most of the other games I usually cover. If a ball went out of bounds, whichever player was closest continued their run to pick up the loose ball, with play resuming once everyone was back in position. Even going into tackles was done with smiles as both teams enjoyed the competition. As one new follower noted on her Facebook page following the game Tuesday
I Had Hella Fun With Soccer ⚽️I Found My Sport💙
That points to another difference. In my discussions with Coaches and players, experience ranges from ‘this year’ to elementary school as there are school programs on the North side offering the game to their students.
The game on Tuesday was scoreless during the first half as Northwest benefitted from some quality play by their goalkeeper who stopped a shot headed for the upper 90 midway through along with another point-blank shot she caught and held. She covered the entire 18 and responded quickly to threats as Soldan has a team of players who love to go forward! NOTE – I misplaced my rosters and am working to get the information so that I can recognize the players by name.
Soldan was a swarming team with lots of speed that always had numbers forward. Four goals were scored in the second half by three players and they could have had several more but for the work of the goalkeeper and a shot off the upright. Again, more once I get the rosters. Sorry.
Here’s a gallery of players I want to recognize
