Chaminade – While Priory battled hard for a halftime draw vs. the Red Devils on Friday afternoon, a few adjustments allowed Chaminade to shift into high gear with 3 goals over a 15 minute span on their way to a 3-0 victory. Eric Fletcher had the shutout for Chaminade, while Tom Barlow, Jordan Bay & Jason Pesek each had a goal for the Red Devils.
Chaminade continues play with four matches this week: at Webster Groves on Monday, at Oakville on Wednesday, and home matches vs. Peoria Notre Dame on Friday and Geneva (IL) on Saturday.
Desmet – Playing their first match after winning the Class 3 state title last season, and getting the game-tying goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation, the Spartans looked to have the momentum in overtime. However, Edwardsville took control at the overtime whistle and produced the game winning goal from sophomore Andrew Mullican just 3 minutes later for a 2-1 victory. The Tigers goal in regulation came from Nick Heinemeier, while BJ Tucker leveled the score for the Spartans to get to overtime.
Desmet will play at Duchesne Thursday before taking part in the CBC Tournament the following week.
Vianney – while Saturday night wasn’t all right for fighting, it was alright for a SoCo rivalry, as the Griffins traveled to 1-0-0 Mehlville to kick off their season. The Griffins controlled the match from the start on the wet turf, keeping the ball away from the young Panthers while dictating tempo on the ground and in the air. Junior Adam Michel converted two crosses into header goals in the second half, while Kyle Bennett took credit in the nets for the shutout to give Vianney a 2-0 season opening victory.
UPDATED – Vianney participates in the Clayton Tournament this week. They play St. Mary’s on Tuesday and Lindbergh on Thursday.
Next week all of the teams will take part in the CBC Tournament.
