UPDATED with PHOTOS – On a night made for soccer, the Lady Billiken’s came out flat but soon set about rectifying the situation. The net result of the poor start was a tie on evening when SLU out-shot the Hawks 22-7 in the most exciting Lady Billiken’s match I’ve seen in the past two seasons.
The second half in particular showed what this team is capable of. The pace of play and ball movement put St Joseph on the defensive throughout and led to tying goal in the 69th minute with senior Allie Reimer getting on the end of Jenny Hummert’s return ball into the box following a corner kick. The opportunity came from aggressive forechecking with freshman Colleen Cole, following her throw-in deep in the offensive end, deflecting an attempted clearance to Abbey Stock who earned the corner kick.
Elking (pictured above) was a revelation as she utilized her one-on-one skills to create opportunities in the offensive end. Her crossing ability is matched only by junior Jessie Jarrett who continued her fine show of two-way soccer from her outside defender position. Abbey Stock, the leading scorer in 2011 as a freshman and a member of the A-10 All-Rookie squad also imposed herself on the game tonight, earning 88 minutes in the contest with well timed runs and aggressive two-way play as the Billikens applied high pressure throughout the final 65 minutes. I talked with Head Coach Kat Mertz afterward, check out the audio interview below for more on the game.
The final home game of the season is Sunday. Temple (5-9-2, 2-3) is in town for a 1 p.m. first whistle. SLU seniors Maggie Baumann, Kaitlyn Doescher, Alli Reimer and Katie Walsh will be honored prior to the Temple game. Local club players wearing their team jersey will be admitted free.
