I welcome a new writer this week. Mark Dorsey, who follows Dutch soccer along with the USA and Arsenal, offers his thoughts on Jozy Altidore’s next move.
The Future of Jozy
After coming off his most successful season yet, Jozy Altidore is looking to take his talents elsewhere this summer. Altidore’s 23 regular season goals were good enough for 4th amongst Dutch league players and the most goals ever for an American overseas. Jozy was also influential in his club team’s, AZ Alkmaar, first KNVB Cup since 1982. Scoring the championship’s game-winning goal, Jozy also led the tournament with 8 goals. Despite AZ’s tournament success they finished in 10th place in the Eredevise and 37pts back of 1st place Ajax which leaves Jozy’s promising future in jeopardy with the club.
Some rumors have circulated that Jozy is interested in heading to the Bundesliga which is a popular promotion route for many rising Eredevise players. Many clubs in the EPL are also very keen to sign the young American striker this summer. With the 2014 World Cup right around the corner, the prices for Jozy could sky rocket if he has a breakout tournament. Where will Jozy end up this summer? I’ve identified a few potential suitors below:
Liverpool – Depending upon the situation that happens with the always controversial Luis Suarez, Brendan Rodgers staff could be looking to the likes of Jozy to compliment Daniel Sturridge and recent signee Iago Aspas at forward. The Fenway group was very close to sign Clint Dempsey last summer due to their American connections and Jozy might be the next American linked with the club.
Aston Villa – Its pretty clear that Belgian star, Christian Benteke, was one of the few highlights for Aston Villa’s season. Villa could look to cash in on Benteke if the price is right from Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, or Liverpool. Should Benteke leave, Altidore would be a more than suitable replacement at Villa Park.
Everton – Despite finishing 6th and above cross town rival, Liverpool, Everton will be looking to boost its attack. Nikica Jelavic was thought to be the lead man for the Everton lone striker role but after scoring only 7 goals in 26 Premier League games. The next manager at Everton will look to add someone up top who can be a target for Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pinear .
West Bromwich Albion – After coming off one of their best seasons in the top flight West Brom will look to continue their success in the premier league. Much of the success for West Brom can be attributed to the breakout season from Romelu Lukaku who was on loan from Chelsea. Lukaku will be welcomed back to Chelsea with open arms next season which will have West Brom on the market looking for a similar forward to Lukaku.
In the Bundesliga Schalke have inquired about Jozy. So has Lazio and a couple mid-tier La Liga teams.
Publisher’s note – of course, former US International Earnie Stewart, the GM at AZ Alkmaar notes he plans to hang onto the striker
