In a clash between the top-ranked Metro Catholic Conference (MCC) programs, the visiting Vianney Golden Griffins earned a well-deserved shutout at Chaminade Prep Wednesday. The win puts them atop the MCC standings with an unblemished record that will be tested once again next week when they’ll complete their MCC schedule against DeSmet on Tuesday and CBC on Saturday October 26th.

The Golden Griffins came into Wednesday’s match on the heels of a pair of overtime wins over Oakville and SLUH but they showed no fatigue enroute to their fifth straight win. They’ve given up a single goal in those five wins, to Oakville on Monday, and their defense set the tone in their win at Chaminade. Goalie Dakota Thorwegen was rarely tested with the only real chances coming from set pieces.
A scoreless first half, the Red Devils got a gasp-inducing save from goal keeper (#29) midway through as his reaction save at the near post kept Vianney off the scoreboard, the best chance of the half for both squads. The Golden Griffins came out strong in the second half however and got both goals in a three minute period early. The first came in the 46th minute as the Chaminade defense was breached by a simple through ball just inside the offensive end that sent an attacker straight at the Red Devils goal. The initial attack was handled but Sr. Adam Michel, following the play, scored with a shot from the left side with a simple strike on the outside of his right foot, bending it away from the keeper into the open net. Pat Dolan was credited with an assist on the goal.
Eric Biras, hero in the SLUH double OT win on Tuesday, scored in the 49th when he nodded Brandon Love’s cross back across the goal mouth from the far edge of the six yard box. His 7th goal overall, his second straight in MCC play.
