Sr Kyle Weinrich, SCW pushes forward against Duchesne
A late season match up that featured a local derby as well as Class 2 District foes, the Warriors opened well Thursday night. A foul 30 yards out near the far touch line offered a direct kick opportunity for senior Kyle Weinrich, one of five boys scheduled to be feted on Senior Night at halftime. Kyle, who is being recognized Saturday at the St Louis Soccer Hall of Fame Banquet as a “Future Star”, offered an example of the talent he has to offer by putting his kick into the top left hand corner of the net to open the scoring in the 5th minute.
On a side note, Madeline Cowell of the Duschesne Pioneers Class 1 State Championship team last Spring, is also being featured as a Future Star along with Madeline ‘Maddie’ Pokorny (Webster Groves) and Sam Peterson (Eureka).
Duchesne, recently seeded first in District 6, just ahead of the Warriors at #2, fought back as outside right Adam Pundmann offered some senior magic of his own, getting forward to finish in the 12th minute with his first goal of the season. St Charles West grabbed their second lead of the game via Logan Gonce, Weinrich’s partner in the central midfield. I was told by @StephenatKSDK who was on hand for the game, that a feature was coming on Logan.
Duchesne, as noted, fought back in the second half with a pair of goals to earn the comeback win. Goal scorers were Jimmy Choinka and Daniel Fink. Blake Goewert in goal played a key role yet again for the Pioneers. Midway through the first half he denied Weinrich a second by tipping the shot over the crossbar.
The Warriors, 2013 GAC North Champions, and new Head Coach Matt Dwyer now prepare for their opening District game against Lutheran St Charles on October 27th at 7pm. Duchesne will face North County Tech at 5pm. Lutheran St Charles is the host. Class 2 District 6
St Charles West face Ft Zumwalt East Saturday in a make up game and have Zumwalt South and Troy remaining next week, all larger schools to prepare them for the second season.
