A new effort. I want to recognize some of the freshman and sophomore girls who played at a high level this past season. I suspect one (Lawler) or two may make the Metro list that STLHighSchoolSports owns but the majority will likely not and in some cases they are not on regional lists either. That’s one reason for my effort here as I suspect these players will impose themselves on games in future seasons.
UPDATE – added All-Metro recognition (four girls)
What’s my criteria? The first and foremost is technical quality. With the on-going discussions on player development the primary effort of any player should be on improving technical quality. After that I weighted what I considered their strength of schedule and finally, the role they played and can expect to play for their team in the future.
I took in 55 games this Spring, beginning with Jamborees at Lutheran St. Charles and Ft. Zumwalt in late March and ending with a pair of quarterfinals at the end of May. I’m limiting my effort to players I saw in action, in every case multiple times. That turned out to be 22 teams, ten of which were Class 4 (MO) or Class 3 (3-IL), ten were Class 3 (MO) or Class 2 (1-IL) and a pair of Class 2 (MO) teams.
For the Large schools, three made it to their respective Final 4 while another four made it to their Quarterfinal or Sectional. For the smaller schools, the list includes a title winner along with three who reached the Final 4 and three to their Final 16 or 8.

As noted at the beginning, these are my personal observations during the recently completed season. There are players I haven’t seen that likely deserve to be on this list, much like what happens in the District, Regional and All-State selections. Regardless, each of these young women will play key roles for their teams going forward and you (and your daughters) can learn from observing their play.
Use the comment form below to offer congratulations or let me know about underclassmen I should watch for next season.
