The Desmet Spartans, winners of five prior State Championships, looked to add one to the second hand for the program’s sixth title. While knocking off MCC rivals CBC and SLUH on their journey, including a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lafayette in the quarterfinals, the Spartans were looking on Friday to get by a tough (25-1-1) Nixa squad, who was playing in their first Final Four.
With the State Championships returning to the World Wide Technology (WWT) Soccer Park, the Spartans took advantage of the solid St. Louis crowd, getting on the board just four minutes into the match, with a Nick Hanson finish from a corner kick and a quick 1-0 lead. Nixa came back five minutes later when a poor Spartan clearance allowed Nixa to knock home the tying goal into an open net. The match was moving toward hafl time tied when Griffin Morgan put the Spartans back on top, a lead they’d never relinquish adding two second half goals from Morgan and Charlie Gibbs to claim a 4-1 victory and place in the final.
On a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, the Spartans took on Francis Howell (19-7-1) in an all-St. Louis area final. While the Spartans created offensive opportunities with numerous corner kicks and shots on goal, it was the Vikings who struck first, on a shot from Caden Castello in the 34th minute that beat Desmet keeper Connor Range. It was the first and only shot on goal for Francis Howell, who received outstanding goalkeeping from Matt Hunt and a stellar defense to limit the Spartans scoring chances and claim the first state title for the Vikings.
Congratulations to Francis Howell on their first title, and to Desmet on finishing a great season at 22-8-1. The final winners were the St. Louis fans, who were again treated to the State Championships and showed great support in their numbers!
