The 2016 US Youth Soccer Region II Championships begin play Friday June 24 and St. Louis sends five State Champion girls teams to the tournament being held in Westfield, IN (North of Indianapolis). There are State Champions at U13 and U19 along with a pair of Midwest Regional League (MRL) qualifiers. They join eight boys teams in representing the metropolitan area this week.
The teams are identified below with links to the Age Group standings and then a link to the individual team. I’m adding game schedules/results to this page as well so bookmark this page!
An additional resource this year is a Digital Program. It is available for Apple iOS, Android and Kindle. It includes Rosters for each team as well as Age Group schedules, so very useful. It can be printed but it’s 78 pages.
U13 Girls – PAO FC RDA
Friday – opened with a 1-3 loss to Omaha
Saturday – got their first Regional win, 2-1 over IN Fire Jrs (Write up below)
Sunday – the girls fall to SLSG Elite 1-2, a rematch of the State Cup Final won by PAO. The last game of the year for both teams
PAO FC 02/03 RDA (MO) took on Indiana Fire Juniors 03 Red (IN) and Indiana Fire’s Quincy McMahon helped her team earn an early lead with a goal in the ninth minute. Five minutes later, PAO FC’s Emily Gaebe made the game an even match with a goal. Just before halftime, Gaebe posted another goal to put PAO FC ahead. As PAO FC held onto the lead in the second half, Indiana Fire continually maintained possession of the ball and looked for the equalizer by applying high pressure to PAO FC’s defense. A huge moment came when Indiana Fire received a penalty kick, but PAO FC’s goalkeeper, Riley Nilges, made the diving save to maintain the lead. Indiana Fire piled on their shots at goal, but PAO FC held on and earned the 2-1 win.
“It was pretty rough,” PAO FC head coach Aaron Wagner said, describing the match. “We ended our game yesterday losing 3-1 against a good competitor. We lost one of our starting center backs who wins all of the balls out of the air early in the second half, so today we had to sit back and counter attack and we pulled the victory, but it was a tough finish for us.”
U14 Girls – Sporting JB Marine Schneider
Friday – a 3-1 win over Kentucky Fire Jr.
Saturday – a 1-1 draw against LFSA (IL) who are ranked #16 nationally. More importantly, it comes after an 0-5 loss to them at the end of the MRL season last year. I like that kind of progress.
Sunday – fall to Waza (MI) 2-4, with a Megan Pappa brace, and finish third. Six goals scored at their first Regional tourney!
In addition, the FCKC Vardar State Champions are part of the age groupU17 Girls – Lou Fusz Wipke
Friday – opened with 2-2 draw against Kings Hammer (OH)
Saturday – won 4-3 against Sporting Iowa under daunting conditions. A red card on a tackle against a breakaway in the 3rd minute forced Wipke to play with 10 for almost the whole game. After allowing 2 goals, the team fought back to take a 3-2 lead, then allowed an equalizer before getting the game-winner with 10 minutes remaining.
Sunday – Got a 4-2 win against REV (MN) but with Kings Hammer 3-0 win over winless Sporting Iowa, fall to 2nd place on goal differential (+3 vs +5).
Lou Fusz Wipke reached the Region II Final last year but lost in the final to FCKC Forte Elite, who went on to reach the National Semifinals last year. They advanced via the Midwest Regional League (MRL) this year.
U19 Girls – SLSG Elite (only team in the age group w/o team page)
Friday – open with a 4-1 win over MI Hawks
Saturday – another win, this 3-1 over KY Fire
Sunday – fall 0-2 to CUP Gold, a familiar foe. The wildcard goes to LSC EGA with a +5 GD, with SLSG and Strike FC being eliminated with +3 GD and six points following identical 2-1 results in their groups.
