The Ft. Zumwalt West Jaguars won 2-1 over the CBC Cadets on Tuesday when a corner kick in the fifth minute of the first overtime was knocked into the net by a CBC player. Mitch Vaughn sent a wonderful ball to the back post where centerback Keegan Dankenbring, who scored the first one for FZW, was waiting. It appeared that the second defender didn’t see the ball as it flew past the defender in front of him, bouncing goal-ward for the upset.
The Cadets opened the scoring in the 45th, coming out strong after a first half that saw FZW have the better opportunities while only requiring one save from GK Anthony Tretter. The Jaguars anticipated the response from CBC but when the Cadet’s getting their passing on, it’s a sight to behold.

EJ Verhulst got the Cadet goal as he received what I didn’t originally consider a pass, but Brendan Hennessey, in diving to win a ball 35 yards out, was working hard to keep the ball and his touch went straight to goal and sent Verhulst in alone between the two central defenders. You can see EJ’s touch in the gallery below, through the GK’s leg’s it appears, for the goal. Minimal celebration as the Cadet’s are all business these days, as are most teams looking to the second season.
The Jaguar’s equalized only three minutes later when Keegan Dankenbring scored from Matt Burmeister. It was important because the Cadet’s become even more focused and controlled the ball for significant periods, using their quick passing skills to keep FZW off-balance while chasing a game-winner. Anthony Tretter came up big as did his defense, with Dankenbring and Tristan Baze in particular standing out for me.
The best opportunities on counter-attacks were long balls, over the defense and to the corners, where Mitch Vaughn in particular were able to use their speed to win the ball and look for teammates. The game-winner came when Travis Hunt got forward to offer Vaughn support before earning the corner kick. The Cadet’s shook hands, and their heads, at the sudden change in fortunes.
I talked to three seniors – Anthony Tretter (GK), Trace Tonioli (MF) and Isaiah Kline (WB) – about the match, a big win in front of their largest crowd of the season on Senior Night against a Top 3 team in the region. They describe the Cadets as one of the best technical teams in the area while describing how they accomplished it. Jr Mitchell Vaughn and Travis Hunt offer some thoughts as well.
The Jaguars finish the regular season at Holt on Thursday before Districts next week. They are the #2 seed in District 5 where the Howell North Knights are number one. They will face #3 seed Howell Central Tuesday.
CBC visits DeSmet tonight in a game that will determine the MCC Champion. There is also the possibility they two teams could face off in the District title match next week, a game won by DeSmet last year in their run to the State Final. DeSmet earned the #1 seed while CBC is second and they’ll face #3 Marquette on Tuesday.
