The U14 (2003) and U15 (2002) Girls met on the pitch at the SLSG Collinsville soccer complex today to contest the first of two SLSG ECNL derby games between the Illinois and Missouri sides. Illinois captured the U14 match 2-0 while Missouri came out on top in the U15 match, 1-0. They’ll meet again in the second game of their home-and-away series on May 21 at the Soccer Park in Fenton.

The 2003’s went to half time scoreless but in the second half the Illinois squad started to get some traction with better passing. A hand ball in the box led to a penalty kick by Grace Giacoletto (#7) who stepped up and put it into the upper left side of the net. A defensive midfielder, Giacoletto showed good touch, the passing skills needed to start the offense and a calm demeanor.
Illinois got a second late when they took advantage of Missouri’s spread defense, having moved from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 in an attempt to equalize. Avery Christopher received a ball in the right half of the box and her shot to the far side had enough on it to roll into the net despite GK Sarah Bozeman getting down and getting a hand on it.

The 2002 girls match was decided in the second half when Rylie Combs finished from a scramble in the box following a corner kick. An important win as the Missouri side continues to battle for an ECNL Wildcard spot for the Summer Championship series. Remember to pick the proper age group to see the standings.
I’m going to have to spend some time with my notes to complete this.
