First, congratulations are in order for the Marquette Explorers who captured the Class 1A Illinois State Championship on Saturday. w00t! Attention now turns to the large school soccer classifications with a full slate of games Tuesday.
On the Illinois side, the Illinois 2A Super Sectional (Quarterfinals) features Gibault Catholic v Glenwood, being played at the University of Illinois Springfield at 5:30 pm Tuesday. David Wilhelm at BND offers a preview.
Quincy Notre Dame has also reached the Sweet 16. Story here
In Missouri, the Class 3 and Class 4 Sectional matches are Tuesday (Quarterfinals Saturday for the winners). Some very interesting match ups. I’m tempted to drive to Rolla to catch the Glendale v Rolla game after experiencing countless versions of this derby, it should be a lot of fun. There will be a new representative Southwest Missouri this year with Carthage’s loss in Districts to Republic who reach the Final 16 for the first time. It was Helias in 2015 and Glendale in 2014. Who will it be for 2017?
I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention St. Dominic at Ft. Zumwalt South. Since the move to Four Classifications, these two teams have played for the Sectional title all four years. South won 3-0 in 2014, St. Dominic 2-1 in 2015 and then a dramatic late goal sent South back to State with a 2-1 win last year. This one deserves a crowd!

Three local games that are impossible to predict. Two MCC schools could advance this year (Quarterfinal match ups are below) so now is the time for the Public Schools to step up. Howell and Mehlville each lost in their Sectional match last year (to Howell North and Eureka respectively) while Howell Central is four years removed from their last trip to State. Chaminade got past Vianney 3-2 in mid-September, part of a 5-1-1 stretch that ended with a loss to Oakville in the final group game at the Guelker tournament. They’ve since won 8 straight, the key wins being over Howell Central (2-0) in mid-October and their upset of SLUH last week in the District Final.
Rockhurst won 1-0 against Blue Springs South last year and 4-1 in early September in the Jaguar’s tournament. BSS lost to Liberty, Raymore-Peculiar and Lee’s Summit while going 2-3 to end the regular season.
Looking West, Smith-Cotton last made it to State as a Class 3 team in 2014, losing to Webster Groves who were enroute to their first State title. Now in Class 4, they got the rematch they wanted with Rock Bridge last week to win their first Class 4 District title. Now it’s time for more challenges for a team that kept sneaking up the rankings as I first noted in late September. The picture above is of the current seniors with their 3rd Place plaque from the Class 3 tournament in 2015. The played Lee’s Summit in late September, winning 2-0 but the Tigers have gone 6-2 since then.
