In the nightcap of the Class 1A Sectional semifinals Tuesday at Columbia High School, Althoff Catholic Suffocates Alton Marquette. A surprise for me and for the Explorers who came in confident but the the Crusaders pace and high pressure defense created opportunities they finished. Marquette was less efficient but not without chances with two off the crossbar and an open net they were unable to get to. One of the crossbars came as GK Lauren Fischer, who’s nailed three direct kick goals this season, had her 40 yard effort in the 65th minute tipped up off the crossbar as Rachel Monken rose high and earned her clean sheet.

Althoff’s first goal came in the 10th minute as So. Liesl Whitener received a ball on the far right, finishing her shot to the far post to open things up for the Crusaders.
One difference I noted in the Crusaders lineup compared to their draw against Quincy Notre Dame in April was the insertion of Jr. Andersyn Foster at center back after getting playing time this season at outside mid and outside back. A forward for her Club program, Juergen Huettner noted it was a change made soon after QND that has helped tighten up their central defense as she and Sr. Sophie Monken swept up many of the challenges presented.
