CBC Cadets Draw With DeSmet Spartans

Carson King and Seth Kacich battle for the ball during the CBC soccer tournament on September 13, 2018

The Metro Catholic Conference season comes to a conclusion on Tuesday when CBC visits Vianney. The Cadets will be shooting for a win to earn the title outright with a 3-1 conference record with the recent win over DeSmet providing the head-to-head tiebreaker. A Vianney win would throw the title to DeSmet who have a 3-1 record and would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over the Golden Griffins. CBC Metro Catholic Conference Title Chase

Of related interest, St. Dominic, who are chasing a Class 3 title will face DeSmet Tuesday, SLUH on Thursday and then Chaminade next week as they wrap their season. They recently lost to Ft. Zumwalt South at home. By dint of that win the Bulldogs are the top-seeded team in District 7 and will likely face the #2 seed Crusaders in the District Final on November 1st. We’ll see soon if the challenging close to the season sharpened their game.

DeSmet Spartans

The Spartan’s opened their MCC Campaign the week after the CBC Tournament, beating Vianney 1-0 on the Monday following their 0-1 loss to the Golden Griffins in the Saturday finale at CBC. They followed with a 2-1 win at Chaminade, only the second loss of the season for the #1 Red Devils squad at the time. They wrapped their Conference season with two games last week, an 0-4 walloping by CBC at home that they followed with a 3-0 shutout of SLUH on the road.

The team is 15-3-2 with two games remaining, including at St. Dominic on Tuesday. Logan Payne, 13-3-2, has given up only 13 goals this season and has nine solo shutouts. The three losses have been to Class 3 Glendale in an early season surprise (0-1) along with the Vianney loss at the CBC tournament to go with CBC’s shutout win last week.

Carson King leads DeSmet with 10 goals and 3 assists for 23 points. Sophomore Thomas Redmond has 7 goals and 4 assists while Sr. Brendan Miller has 7 goals and 3 assists from his outside back position, also contributing 5 game-winners, tops on the team. Seniors Avi Wesseh and Lucas Payne have also contributed 8 goals and 5 goals respectively.

CBC Cadets

The Cadet’s lost their first MCC match when Chaminade visited Labor Day weekend and won 2-1. They waited until October for their next Conference game, winning 6-0 against SLUH on October 2 before traveling to DeSmet last week for the big 4-0 win over the Spartans. Check out the interview below with Coach Michler following that game.

The team is 17-2-2 and the top-ranked team in the latest Coaches Poll. They shutout #2 Rockhurst 2-0 this past weekend at the Art Firley Shootout, while Rockhurst and Chaminade went 1-1 on the weekend at the JeffCity Jay’s hosted event. The Cadet’s played to a scoreless draw with Vianney to open the CBC Tournament back on September 11th, part of a 13-1-2 run since the Labor Day loss to CCP. An 0-3 loss to Lindbergh in the CYC Tournament is the lone loss in that period.

CBC has three primary scorers with Nathan Temm scoring 15 with 4 assists, Camden Starzyk (an STLFC Academy addition) has 13 goals and 9 assists and Sam Benoist 11 goals and 7 assists. Starzyk holds the points leadership with 35, to go with 6 Game Winning goals. Temm has 35 points and 5 game winners. Sr. David Fitzgerald is 17-2-2 with 12 goals against and 10 solo shutouts as the goalkeeper.

Basketball analyst Earl Austin Jr. was on hand for the CBC v DeSmet game last week and took a few minutes to talk to Head Coach Terry Michler about the game. As always, some interesting insight from Coach Michler.

Vianney Golden Griffins

The Golden Griffins Conference campaign began with a narrow 0-1 loss to DeSmet the Monday following the CBC Tournament where Vianney edged the Spartans 1-0 in their Saturday match. They went on to win their Conference matches against SLUH and Chaminade later that week, both 1-0 wins. They have losses to Kirkwood in the CYC opener and Summit, the top-ranked Class 3 program in the state.

Kyle Diffley has gone 12-3-2 this season with only 7 goals against and 13 solo shutouts in Vianney’s 13-3-2 season thus far. The team has only scored 19 goals thus far as they have relied on their defense in reaching double digit in wins. Jacob Sansone is the leading scorer with 6 goals and 2 assists as well as 5 game winners. Junior Tommy Mataya has 3 goals while seniors Colin Doherty and Brendan Dolan have contributed 2 apiece.

Vianney and CBC are now part of District 6 and could play a third time this season although Lindbergh, who have split a pair of games against CBC already, will hope to have a say in the results. Kirkwood is the fourth team in the group.

Chaminade Red Devils

The Red Devils opened the season as the top-ranked team in the State, falling to third in the second poll and moving into the second spot in last week’s third poll. They only trail CBC by two points and hold a 9-3 advantage in coaches who voted them number one in the poll so we could see a rematch in the Quarterfinals this year. They opened 8-1 with a loss to Marquette (WI) the only blemish, including Conference wins over SLUH (5-1) and CBC (2-1) in the the first two weeks of the season. The streak was ended when DeSmet visited September 20th in a game that reinforced for me that DeSmet had a team that could go far in the playoffs, coming after a series of strong games at the CBC Tournament. Two days later a trip to Vianney ended in an 0-1 loss to the Golden Griffins, leaving the Red Devils at 2-2 in the Conference.

Chaminade shrugged those games off to go on an 11 game winning streak, out-scoring their opponents 49:5 with six shutouts. The streak was ended Saturday in a narrow 0-1 loss to Blue Valley Northwest at the Art Firley tournament. A team that lost 8-2 to #9 ranked Marquette on Friday.

Joe Mitchell is 15-2-1 for the Red Devils with only 8 goals against and 5 solo shutouts. The top scorer is Sr. Joe Reed with 15 goals and 7 assists thus far. Jr Arthur DeCampos is also in double digits with 12 goals and 6 assists. Seniors Ethan Garamella, Jack Mika and Zach Quante have contributed 6, 6 and 4 goals respectively while Mika has 4 game-winners, closely followed by Garamella’s 3. They continue to benefit from a District that includes three public North County programs. Howell or Zumwalt West are likely Sectional foes.

SLUH Jr. Billikens

The first season under new Head Coach Bob O’Connell has not been an easy one for the proud program. They opened the season with a 5-1 loss at Chaminade and have gone on to lose their four Conference games with shutouts against Vianney, CBC and DeSmet. They stand 5-13-1 to date with Peter Herrmann at 5-10-1 as their primary keeper on the season. He does have 3 solo shutouts, against Webster Groves, Rock Bridge and Belleville West.

Louis Vacca leads the team in scoring with 4 goals and an assist for 9 points. Ethan Joly and Charles Neuwirth have each contributed 3 goals and freshman Tilahun Murphy has 2 goals and a pair of assists. Joly has a pair of game-winners and Murphy has one among these four.
