The Visitation Vivettes broke open the game Thursday when Sr. Lauren Mazurek scored a hat trick in seven minutes of the second half enroute to a 4-0 shutout of the visiting Southern Boone County Eagles. The Vivettes return to the Final Four for the first time since 2016 and their fifth trip this decade.

The Vivettes didn’t do themselves any favors in the first half, ending a number of promising attacks with shots from outside the box while Southern Boone were well-organized and had obviously heard of Jaime Tottleben who regularly drew a pair of defenders. The breakthrough came from two yards out when a through ball slipped through the keepers hands and Mazurek pounced in the 48th minute. A minute later, a free kick from from the far side about 30 yards out hit off the cross bar and into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Mazurek got her third in the 55th minute when she one-timed a ball into the box by Fr. Josephine Strauss (pictured above). Jaimie Tottleben added the fourth on a ball from Fr. Ruth McKee.
Soon after that both coaches began liberal substitutions to get all of their players minutes in the match. For the Eagles, who traveled very well with an enthusiastic crowd urging them on, it was another Quarterfinal disappointment as they work to upgrade their schedule to better prepare for these moments. I’m glad I chose to shoot on the far side so I could capture the size of the crowd that was on-hand to support both teams Thursday.
