The Francis Howell School District put on a remarkable derby game Saturday as Howell Central won the rubber match, a Class 4 Quarterfinal, with Howell on a Jenna Mathis brace. Mathis got her first on a 20 yard direct kick following a hand ball on an attempted clearance. She put it just under the crossbar to tie the game in the 49th minute. The Vikings had opened the scoring in the 36th on a 40 yard laser to the upper left corner by Jr Olivia Bunton. Howell Central Advances

The game-winner came in the 71st minute and Mathis did it from the run of play this time. A Vikings attacker lost control of the ball along the touchline in an unforced error, following 71 minutes in today’s heat and humidity. The resulting throw-in found Mathis who following a touch and slight turn buried a left footed shot inches from the goalkeepers effort to keep it out. Despite the Vikings best efforts to match the late goal, the Spartans held on to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 2015.
