Opening game of group play Saturday and I caught a U16 boys match between KCSG Pre-Academy and Lou Fusz Limpert. Limpert reached the Final last year and as I noted in my State Cup preview, came into the match ranked #2. Their opponent, KCSG, is ranked #3 by Youth Soccer Ranking. With three brackets, losing makes it tough to advance and both teams avoided that fate by playing to a scoreless draw. That opens up the possibility of both advancing if they win their two remaining games, earning a possible wildcard spot for the Bracket B squads.
For KCSG the result was achieved by some outstanding work by their goalkeeper, Cole Stewart (Lee’s Summit West), pictured above. Limpert attacked from the first minute, drawing the first save on a shot from the left side as #10 moved down the touchline before cutting into the box. It foreshadowed a day of frustration for the boys in white as Stewart stopped several breakaways during the course of the match. Lou Fusz had a distinct corner kick advantage (7-1 by my count) but again, the finish was lacking.
KCSG had opportunities of their own, it was easy to see why they came in ranked #3 after a Spring season that included Midwest Conference play. They’ll close group play Monday against SLSG West Gold who did earn a 1-0 win against them in Conference play so nothing will be given.
In Bracket A, defending champions SLSG Elite opened with a big 5-0 win against KC Athletics who were the most closely ranked squad. A win today against Lou Fusz Windmueller, who won 3-2 against Sporting Springfield, could ensure they advance.
Bracket C featured wins by Sporting STL Howe, 2-1 over Real STL Schumacker while SLSG ECNL/Premier shutout Lou Fusz Phillips 3-0. Based upon the rankings, it would seem that Monday’s match between Howe and SLSG could determine the bracket winner.
