Monday brought group play to a close at the Missouri State Cup and I caught a 2006 Girls match – JB Marine Garabedian v Missouri Rush Hellman. The two teams were closely matched as evidenced by the scoreless draw. For Garabedian, it meant they finished the tournament undefeated with three draws including against the eventual qualifier, SLSG Elite who finished top of the table with two wins and a 1-1 draw against JB Marine. It was the only goal allowed for SLSG. The three points earned by Garabedian put them second in the group.

Missouri Rush Hellman lost to Gallagher but drew with KC Athletics as well, earning two points and pointing to a balanced group that didn’t have the scoring of the leaders. What the teams doe have is the love of the game without the cynicism that eventually creeps in. All effort, no gamesmanship. Battling for the ball but no shirt-pulling. It made for a great end to my weekend of coverage Monday and I look forward to seeing more of the girls over the next five plus years.
