The 2019 Missouri State Cup Champions will be crowned in seven boys and two girls age groups following games at Creve Coeur Park soccer complex Friday and Saturday. While the trophies have changed (this is the KC Pace U18 boys celebrating their win over Lou Fusz Popovic in 2006. Check out my full week of photos that started my second year of covering the beautiful game) the motivations have not. I’ll be on hand for three games Friday and hope the weather allows coverage on Saturday. This is a live post, meaning I’ll be updating it over the course of the next 72 hours with results, photos and commentary.

GIRLS U13 (2006)
FINAL, Friday June 7, 3:00 pm- Final: Sporting STL Academy 2-1 SLSG Elite
— SportingSTL (@SportingSTL) June 7, 2019
Sporting STL Academy and SLSG ECNL both finished 2-0-1 with seven points and a +8 Goal Differential while giving up zero goals. They played to a scoreless draw in the initial group game so I’ll have to dig into how the finish was determined. Anyone have the details? In Bracket B, SLSG Elite drew 1-1 against JB Marine Garabedian in the opening group game but finished with two wins and seven points to advance.
UPDATE – Sporting STL and SLSG ECNL had a PK shootout about 30 minutes after their games ended Monday to determine the bracket winner. The Sporting STL keeper saved three attempts in helping the team advance.
Unusually, I have seen Sporting STL play twice, at 9v9 in the Missouri Rush tournament a year ago. They won in PK’s against SLSG Elite and against Missouri Rush Hellman. Both games were very entertaining with plenty of skill. I look forward to seeing what the girls look like on a full size pitch.

GIRLS U14 (2005)
FINAL, Friday June 7, 6:00 pm – Lou Fusz Geerling v Sporting STL Academy, a rematch won 3-1 by Sporting STL. A search shows it is the first win for Sporting over their foes in a two year period across State Cup, SLYSA and Midwest Conference (formerly MRL) play. Both teams advance to the Midwest Regionals.
If you appreciate my efforts to expand coverage of the game, consider purchasing a photo. Check out Sporting STL v Lou Fusz Geerling in the Final as well as Sporting STL v Lou Fusz Tottleben in the semifinal.
The defending champion (at U13) is Lou Fusz Geerling who defeated Sporting STL Stevens 2-1 in the Final last year, only after getting into the knockout round as a wildcard. They’ve enjoyed an undefeated run in the Midwest Conference this Spring , including wins over Sporting STL and Lou Fusz Tottleben. They have already qualified for the USYSA National Championship series in Kansas City in July after going undefeated and winning their National League group this Winter as well.
Sporting STL completed their advance with a 2-2 draw against Lou Fusz Tottleben, earning 7 points with a pair of wins plus the draw.
Because of Geerlings qualifying via Midwest Conference, there will be a second Missouri team advancing to Regionals, either by winning Cup next weekend or finishing second to Geerling.
BOYS U13 (2006)
FINAL, Friday June 7, 6:00 pm – SLSG Premier ECNL 0-1 #2 Sporting STL Navy Goddard
SLSG advances with three wins and the full 9 points, giving up only two goals while scoring 11. That’s matched by Sporting STL with the full 9 points, all shutouts with 11 goals.

FINAL, Friday June 7, 3:00 pm – SLSG Elite 2-0 KCSG Academy, a rematch
The defending champion SLSG 2005 Elite, who won 2-1 over KCSG Academy Navy last June, will face them in a rematch this year. They are ranked #4 by Youth Soccer Rankings, behind #1 Lou Fusz Wipke and the #3 KC Scott Gallagher Academy squad. KCSG advanced with a 1-0 win over Wipke on Monday (pictures below) KCSG had three shutouts, scoring 15 goals in the three games. SLSG Elite scored 11 in their three shutouts.

SLSG 2004 Elite are the defending champions, defeating Unified FC in the Final after losing to them in the group game last Summer. The come in ranked #2. #4 KCSG Academy advanced with two early wins and a draw with their club teammates on Pre-Academy Monday. #3 JB Marine Gober overcame a draw in their opening game with a pair of wins for 7 points and a +8 goal differential. They gave up one goal, in the opening 1-1 draw. I predicted earlier this year that we might see SLSG Elite face off against JB Marine Gober in the final as the two teams competed in the Midwest Conference this year. Gober won that match in late April on a penalty kick in the second half. That came a couple weeks after Elite beat Gober 3-0 in a Gallagher tournament match. We’ll see how that prediction, and a potential rubber match, plays out after Friday’s semifinals.
SLSG Premier Navy advanced as the wildcard, one of three teams with six points. The difference was their +5 goal differential, the others were at +0.
JB Marine Gober has qualified for Regionals already by winning their Midwest Conference Premier I group so there will be two Missouri competitors in this age group.
BOYS U16 (2003)
FINAL Saturday June 8, 9:30 am – SLSG Elite 2-1 Lou Fusz Limpert
SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 12:00 pm – SLSG Elite 4-1 KCSG Pre-Academy (wildcard)
SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 12:00 pm – Lou Fusz Limpert 4-2 SLSG Premier
The defending champions are SLSG Elite, 3-1 winners over Lou Fusz Limpert in the U15 final last year. #1 SLSG Elite finished with seven points following a draw Monday after they had already earned the bracket title on Sunday. #2 Lou Fusz Limpert won the bracket following a draw against #3 KCSG Pre-Academy Monday. KCSG finished as the wild card with an identical seven points but a +3 goal differential compared to Limpert’s +7. The #4 SLSG ECNL also earned seven points this weekend, finishing with a draw against Sporting STL.
First Day report – Lou Fusz Limpert Scoreless Draw with KCSG Pre-Academy and Photo Gallery
On another note, there was a flurry of official action towards the end of the SLSG Elite match against KC Athletics. An unafilliated observer indicated there had been a fight, with a couple of red cards and possible parent involvement. Tsk tsk.
SUNDAY – Sporting STL Academy Howe v Lou Fusz Phillips
BOYS U17 (2002)
FINAL Saturday June 8, 12:00 pm – JB Marine Mann 1-2 (PK’s) SLSG Elite (a rematch, video highlights below)
SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 3:00 pm – JB Marine Mann 2-0 Lou Fusz Carotenuto Red
SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 3:00 pm – SLSG Elite 3-0 Lou Fusz Winkelmann (wildcard)
In the Final, JB Marine went up in the 80th minute when John Gates chipped the keeper from 25 yards after making a 30+ yard run down the left side. It required stoppage time for SLSG to claw back, scoring via Riley Dubb’s I believe (#37) as a free kick into the box was knocked down but Dubb’s fired home from just outside. It went to penalty kicks eventually and SLSG opened and JBM saw their first go off the upright. On the second round both keepers made saves. Third round was good for both teams as was the fourth round but Marko Anic stepped up to take the fifth for SLSG and scored, sealing the victory 4-2 in PK’s. See video of the SLSG tying goal and full PK round below.

The defending champions are JB Marine Mann who beat long time foes SLSG Elite on a set piece with two minutes remaining in the second overtime period. You can see video of the goal in my Final’s Report last year. Elite comes in ranked #1 and Mann #3 in separate brackets (thanks to seeding of the semifinalists by MYSA). Mann won their first two games but finished with an 0-1 loss to SLSG Premier White Monday, leading to three teams with 6 points in Bracket A. Mann placed first with a +4 goal differential while Lou Fusz Winkelmann were second with +3. Premier White had a +0 Goal differential in missing advancement to the knockout rounds.
#1 Elite won all three matches this weekend with 13 goals (Mann had seven). #4 Lou Fusz Carotenuto Red, a semifinalist last year, return this year with nine points including a pair of shutouts. They gave up one goal to Knights SC, in the 37th minute. They went down and scored to tie the game a minute later and added three more in the second half. Winkelmann advance despite an opening 1-4 loss to Mann by scoring six in their win Monday against SLSG Premier.

SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 12:00 pm – SLSG Elite 6-2 KC Blaze Academy (wildcard)
SEMIFINAL Friday June 7, 12:00 pm – Lou Fusz Carron 2-0 Sporting STL Academy McCarthy
In the FINAL, Lou Fusz went ahead but SLSG tied it in the 35th minute on a header by Camden Staryzk from a free kick near the touchline about 15 yards out. Then late in the second half Tony Bodul picked up a ball in the box and beat the keeper from the right for the final margin.

Defending champions are SLSG Elite, 3-2 winners over Lou Fusz Carron. Elite are #1 in the rankings and could face #3 Lou Fusz Carron in a Final’s rematch. They’ll have to get past Wildcard KC Blaze who advance with six points despite a 1-2 loss to Carron on Monday. Of three teams with six points, they were the only one with a positive (+3) goal differential. #2 Sporting STL McCarthy, a semifinalists last year, advance with seven points.

Best analytical advice I ever received: "If you want to understand soccer, stop watching the ball". Five years later I'm still working on it, but it's better
