The Gallagher Friendlies brought me out Saturday to catch a match between 2001: JB Marine Schneider and Team Chicago. The two will also be matched in the Premier I division of the National League Midwest Conference so Saturday’s game offered a bit of a preview as the teams continued their early season preparations. In addition to the Midwest Conference, the Schneider girls will compete in the State Cup as well as returning to the National League for the second straight season.

The game saw Team Chicago take the lead three separate times as Schneider fought back twice but ran out of gas at the end of a 6-3 loss. The team has some front runners that came close with both Skylar Hollingshead (St. Dominic) and Olivia Bunton (Howell) breaking into the box ahead of their defenders but stymied by the keeper. That left it open for Chicago to take the early lead with goals in the 24th and 30th minute. Schneider came out to start the second half energized and Katie Spotanski put a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side to the back post that was finished for a goal. In the 30th, another set piece, this time a corner kick, was finished after a scramble in the box to tie the score at 2-2 in the 42nd (35 min halves).
The team has two goalkeepers and Alyssa Kerperien (Seckman) opened followed by newcomer Alli Palmatier (St. Dominic) who joined the team after her previous team all graduated. The second half was wide open and Alli was able to stop a breakaway but then was victimized as a square ball in the 50th found a wide open run on the left by Chicago, giving them their second lead at 3-2. JBM came right back a minute later to again tie the score when Spotanski played a give and go with a teammate before then releasing a slick little through ball that sent Hollingshead in alone. Her initial shot was knocked down but she picked up the rebound and finished it for a 3-3 tie.
The final six minutes were all Chicago unfortunately. It started in the 64th with a 40 yard rocket that just eluded Palmatier’s effort to get it. In the 66th, a 50/50 ball won at midfield was turned into a goal on a ball that bounced at the top of the box and fell favorably to the forward who otherwise looked well covered. It ended with a penalty kick after an attacker was taken down in the box. After successfully finishing the PK, the whistle blew on the 6-3 win for the visitors.
