New Years Day was spent at Vetta SoccerDome in Webster Groves catching a pair of finals in their Futsal tournament held across at least three of their facilities. SoccerDome is the closest both geographically and in my heart, a place I spent more Wednesday nights than I can count playing with my Southside team (half of the lads worked on the bottling line at A-B) in the 80’s. To this day, when I hear Foreigner I immediately flash back to the parking lot of the Dome as I headed out after a late night game, some post-game camaraderie and of course the necessary re-hydration efforts. So off to Webster Groves I went for the Futsal 2008: Missouri Rush Sommer vs Blue Warriors match.

2008’s are fifth and sixth graders and that’s not an age group I’ve watched since my nephew and his St. Michael’s teammates aged out (and have now graduated from Webster Groves) so it was interesting to see the level. That comes after seeing the 2009 girls at the Real WC STL futsal tournament earlier this week and as the kids used to say “It’s all good”. The game started fast, didn’t slow down and my initial thought was that the Sommer boys would go onto win, especially since they were playing against a group of schoolmates rather than a traditional club opponent. Turns out the Blue Warriors, with players from Lou Fusz, Sporting STL and another club or two were ready, going onto a 5-2 win.
Reporting scores from games at this level is not high on my list of goals but learning to win is an acquired skill along with the other aspects of the game. More interesting to me is seeing how much fun they are having and what are the levels of technical skills and tactical understanding. When you see a budding Stan Stamenkovic, well that’s the icing on the cake.
