On this day, Tuesday March 19, 2019: The Red Knights and Crusaders have a long history of competition with the last four years in Class 3 being especially fraught. Tuesday’s match was the first game for both teams. For St. Dominic, the first since their quarterfinal loss to Incarnate Word back on May 26th. Incarnate went on to reach the Final last year, falling to Summit 1-0. That recent history offers some insight into the high level these teams displayed Tuesday and for the Crusaders it was a significant outcome. In a game like this, with significant contributions across both teams, I’m going to draw your attention to a freshman first and foremost. OTD: St. Dominic at Incarnate Word (2019)

UPDATE: St. Louis City and St. Louis County have issued a ‘stay-at-home’ order that lasts for at least 30 days, beginning Monday. That moves any Spring sports to the week of April 20 at the earliest. I’ll continue this OTD effort during that time.
I first began shooting High School soccer in March 2005. That makes this my 16th year of coverage and I’ll admit that I’m anticipating retirement. I pay Smugmug.com (my photo website provider) $250 a year to host and provide print and download services for my readers. This April will very likely be the last time I renew the service. That means you have a year to access my archives and purchase photos. Your purchases go towards fees like that as well as the website hosting, related software services and camera gear. Travel (over 5,000 miles a year) as well as the time spent (6-8 hours per game when travel, shooting, writing and editing are included) on the 150 games I cover on average annually do add up. I’m a small business and your support is always appreciated.
Today marks the first in what I anticipate will be a season long effort to offer content that hopefully earns your attention. I’m using my PHOTO GALLERIES to identify games and then going back to the original post and my audio notes to tell the story again. If there are games you’d like to see included from the 2017-2019 seasons (so most seniors have a chance to see an earlier effort representing their school) feel free to contact Ole. Share this with a photo of your 2019 and or 2020 seniors and I’ll add that to this report.
The story St. Dominic Opens Big at Incarnate Word is pretty complete. Check it and the gallery out. The Crusaders went on to win the Class 3 title in 2019, defeating Rockwood Summit in PK’s. It was their first title since winning the Class 2 title in 2013. That was the last year when their were only three classes. It was the fifth state title for St. Dominic. There were six seniors in 2019. Mackenzie Ballard, Rachael Livingston, Maddie Schnurr, Caroline Staebell, Maddy Stewart and Natalie Zoellner. For 2020 there are five seniors: Alyssa Buchheit, Skylar Hollingshead, Grace Osvath, Alli Palmatier and Anna Stiffler. Read the story to see how I called the Crusader’s championship on the first day of the season.
Incarnate Word continued their string of consecutive District titles and reached the Quarterfinals where they faced St. Dominic who won 4-1 enroute to their title. There were seven IWA seniors in 2019: Madi Dunahue, Alli Frederking, Liz Goldstein, Paige Jackson, Olivia Layton, Maggie Murphy and Carli Schieferle. The 2020 roster shows ten seniors: Emma Cadwell, Lydia Dieckmann, Gabby Graham, Maggie James, Hanna Jones, Lois Landreth, Grace Moeller, Faith Montandon, Grace Paez and Saige Stowers.
Yes, I do know today is the 21st and this game was the 19th. It felt like a good place to start after deciding to move forward on this yesterday (sorry Metro Cup). I hope to be caught up either today or tomorrow going forward.
