With the beautiful weather, I took some time to drive by the soccer facilities in the Maryland Heights flood plains. All three were closed as expected but it was interesting to note that Creve Coeur Park soccer complex has deployed a police officer to keep people out of the facility (picture below). Apparently it was necessary as there were people ignoring the announcement that the facility was closed due to the novel coronavirus stay-at-home order. For Lou Fusz, pictured above, the facility manager (in the cart) met me at the gate moments after I pulled up to get a photo. They have also had to let folks know that the facility is closed. Lamenting The Lost Parkway College Showcase
STATUS UPDATE: The complex will remain closed through at least Wednesday, April 22 in the effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. All rentals (regardless of size) are canceled during this period. Please stay informed on COVID-19 at https://t.co/91aU1W8xZ4.

The Showcase is, and has been, a significant starting point for 19 years now and this was to be it’s 20th annual event. I started traveling up from Springfield to cover Glendale and Kickapoo in the previous decade and it’s been a lot of fun getting to chat with coaches and players early in the season. It’s a small thing in comparison to the likely loss of the overall high school season, the impact on the club season we are seeing now and the college recruiting process that increases this time of year as college coaches are more available to scout but it’s been a fun one for me. I do want to say thank you to Coach Skordos and all the staff from the Parkway school district who put on the event. It is a fund raiser for the athletic programs and that will be just one of several impacts the programs will feel this year.
If you want to join me in saying thank you, I’m willing to bet the crew at Parkway College Showcase would love to hear from you. Find a favorite photo from a previous event and tag them on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram (or all of the above). The weather isn’t helping matters, it’s almost as if it’s taunting us with one of the best forecasts ever.
If you are interested, I’ve got 29 galleries tagged from previous Showcase events if you want to take a look. From most recent to earliest games on smugmug in 2011. I’ll find more when I’m doing working on the archive. Speaking of which, I’ll be eliminating the purchase option for photos in the archives as I look to reduce costs during this time. If you are looking for a particular shot you remember, contact Ole and I’ll help you find it.
So St Louis County now has a police car in place at @ccparksoccer in order to enforce an order that folks are not allowed on the fields. Most High Schools and other facilities are not allowing access either. It’s a health risk and a legal liability risk since they would likely get sued if someone could point to being infected at their facility. #stayhome #stlsoccer
I’m collecting thoughtful written items on what the loss of the season means personally. As you’ll discover, they’ve done a much better job than I offer here. Well done and thank you to all of them.
