One year from now St. Louis should be hosting the USYSA Midwest Regionals. I say should simply because there have been so many changes that all rippled out following US Soccer disbanding the US Soccer Development Academy. The original press release on January 7, 2019. St. Louis Hosting Midwest Regional in 2021
US Youth Soccer has awarded the 2021 US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships to St. Louis. The games will take place June 25-30, 2021 at the Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex and Lou Fusz Athletic Soccer Complex in Maryland Heights. The Missouri Youth Soccer Association and St. Louis Sports Commission will serve as the host organizations for the event.
The Midwest Regional Championships will attract more than 220 boys and girls teams in the 13U through 19U age groups from the 14 State Associations that make up US Youth Soccer’s Midwest Region (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio-North, Ohio-South, South Dakota and Wisconsin). Regional winners will earn a berth to the 2021 US Youth Soccer National Championships.
The Creve Coeur Park Soccer Complex and Lou Fusz Athletic Soccer Complex have 21 synthetic turf soccer fields combined, and are located less than a mile apart – all within Creve Coeur Park.
The event is an opportunity to showcase both area teams and the community. The one concern I have is the fact that the facilities are located in the Missouri River floodplain and while this season has been relatively dry, it only takes a one inch rain experience to cause flooding on Creve Coeur Mill Road. It is a challenge to get in and out of the two facilities even when dry but flooding could send those 200 teams home less than impressed with the facilities here which would impact future tournament sign ups and hosting opportunities. One additional factor I’ve hoped would be addressed after Creve Coeur Park was opened is the poor quality cellular service. Fill the facilities up and the cellular service will only deteriorate further. That will impact media organizations as well as the participants.
The photo above came from the SLYSA twitter feed in May 2017. You probably recall the flooding we had last year. Will 2021 continue the every two year trend we’ve seen? Does the County have plans to improve Creve Coeur Mill Road, by adding flood ponds if not elevating the road? Do you have your fingers crossed?
The Midwest Regional Championships will take place in St. Louis for the first time and returns to Missouri for the first time since 2001 when the event was held in Springfield.
