On Thursday, the Clayton Greyhounds hosted the Parkway West Longhorns in a match between Class 3 District foes. Seeding would be completed the following day for the upcoming District playoffs so there was plenty to play for at Centene Stadium. Clayton Greyhounds v Parkway West Longhorns

The game got off to a fast start with West getting into the attack early. We also got a glimpse of what was to come as the Greyhounds countered in the 2nd minute, pulling the keeper out of the goal but seeing the ensuing shot cleared off the goal line by a defender. About six minutes elapsed and Clayton once again caught West with a counter. This after a pair of Longhorn corner kicks, the ball was cleared out just beyond the box and a quick pass down the left sent Ben Brewer in the attack. A square ball from the left, a nice ball to his feet, the lone defender was stuck with a difficult choice. As Brewer entered the box, his shot was well placed to the right side, eluding the keepers effort as well. 1-0 Clayton.
Clayton got their second about 29 min in when a ball from the center circle found the left side midfielder who was able to win a 1v1 to get into the box. Ball laid off and struck one time by Zach Stapleton (seen above) saw the GK get down and get a hand on the shot but he was unable to keep it out. It had to have hurt for West as they’d just finished a sequence of over a dozen passes in the attack but the last one was just beyond the center midfielders reach and Clayton struck quickly.
Stapleton, who finished with three goals, got his second of the match about six minutes into the second half. A well struck ball from outside the box was headed for the far side netting but the West goalkeeper did a good job of getting down and pushing it wide. Stapleton was waiting and his shot from a severe angle on the edge of the six yard box finished in the roof of the net as he hit over the head of the keeper who had gotten up and moved across but what a shot it was. 3-0 Clayton
West responded about the 65th on a set piece. It came from the left side, in front of the team bench and a challenge by a West attacker kept the goalkeeper from catching the ball. The loose ball was finished by Sr. Joe Rosenberg as the Longhorns attempted to fight back. Stapleton sealed the result with his third of the game in the 70th on a sweet set piece. The ball from 25 yards was struck hard and waist high, just wide of the wall. In what must have been a well run play, Stapleton was ready and made the run unmarked in the box and got a foot up to redirect the ball past the on-rushing keeper.
Clayton is hosting the District 4 tournament and the advantage of not getting this story done in a more timely manner is that I can tell you the two teams will meet in the first round of the tournament. Ladue earned the top seed and will play Principia while #2 Clayton faces #3 Parkway West.
