Pictured above is a wonderful memory box that Jeff Drake made for his father Vince this holiday season. For those not familiar with Vince, he spent 47 years coaching High School boys and 28 coaching girls during that time. It was all spent at St. Thomas Aquinas, later the consolidated St. Thomas Aquinas-Mercy (located just North of I-270 just East of the Hanley/Graham Road exit) and later Trinity High School when STAM was closed with students moving to the former Rosary HS. His Boys record is 737-145-133 and includes 11 state titles, behind only Terry Michler (MO Soccer Coaches Records). His record with the girls was 349-195-28 which places him in 10th place on MO Soccer Coaches record books. Overall he is second behind Dave Robben’s 1125 combined wins while Vince comes in with 1086 for his career.
In 2013 the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame named Drake, along with Terry Michler, “Metro Legends”. The Metro Legends Award is awarded annually to a local coach or athletic director who has devoted his/her life to leading young men and women to success through successful experiences as an athlete within their programs. The two coaches were also part of the inaugural Hall of Fame class for the Missouri High School Soccer Coaches Association. Coach Drake was named the National Soccer Coach of the Year in 1977, 1994, and 1998.
Vince is a 1964 graduate of Mercy High School who got to Coach at his alma mater and coach some incredible players. My favorite is Mike Sorber, now with LAFC and the best player for the US during the 1994 World Cup. He also coached Josh Sargent’s father Jeff Sargent who played with Jeff Drake at Aquinas-Merch and later at Florissant Valley and Sangamon State (now Illinois-Springfield). He is still coaching as a volunteer with is son-in-law Brad Fischer at Ft. Zumwalt West.
A side note – I moved to Florissant in 1974, enrolling at FloValley soon after. I thinks it’s interesting that Coach Drake’s title streak began the following year. Coincidence?
