With a brief press release last week, the Saint Louis Scott Gallagher soccer club announced their intention to return to USL League2 beginning this Summer. The same day saw an announcement by the St. Louis Lions to take a year off from competing in ULS League 2 for 2021. For the Lion’s, it’s the unfortunate result of revenue losses due to the pandemic in 2020. The team that first played in the 2005 season will go on hiatus. From the SLSG press release:

Led by SLSG Academy Director, Steve Trittschuh, Saint Louis Scott Gallagher will compete in USL League Two’s heartland division against Des Moines Menace, Green Bay Voyageurs, Kaw Valley FC, Peoria City, Chicago FC United, and FC Wichita. USL League Two consists of 14 regular season matches for each team, seven home and seven away, and provides amateur players the opportunity to compete at a high level while maintaining their amateur status and college eligibility. Teams in the USL League Two consist of 26 players, eight of which can be above the age of 24.

“We are extremely excited to be joining USL League Two,” said St. Louis Scott Gallagher Club President and former U.S. men’s national team player Brad Davis. “As we continue to push forward and provide our club and members with a great experience, this gives us the ability to provide another platform for our players to develop. This is a great addition for our player pathway and we want to thank USL League Two for the opportunity.”

More information on the league schedule, tryouts and team will be announced in the upcoming months.

This is the second excursion in USL League2 for SLSG, the first coming in 2016 when they took over the Springfield Demize team founded in 2006. Kevin Stoll, now an assistant at St. Louis University, was named Head Coach for the team that played it’s games at the SLSG Collinsville facility. The team had previously been coached by Andrew Bordelon (now Asst at NIU) and Ian Henry (now an asst for SIUE).

The team went on hiatus in 2018 after two years of competing in the league. A look at some of the players who represented the club during that period can be found on the Wikipedia page. SLSG Enters St Louis Lions Exit USL League 2

USL League Two, formerly the Premier Development League, is a development soccer league sponsored by United Soccer Leagues in the United States and Canada, forming part of the United States soccer league system. The league featured 72 teams in 2019, split into eleven regional divisions within four conferences. For 2020 there are 80 teams within twelve divisions and four conferences.

USL League Two regular season takes place during the summer from early May to mid-July. Each team plays a 14-match schedule against their respective divisional opponents, seven at home and seven away. In conferences with three divisions, each division winner, plus the highest-finishing second-place team in the conference, advances to the playoffs in the conference semifinals. In conferences with two divisions, the top two teams from each division advance to the conference semifinals. The playoffs occur in late July, with each conference champion advancing to the national semifinals and the winners of those matches advancing to the USL League Two Championship in early August.
