I needed to write this down just so I’ll be able to keep it straight in the coming weeks and months as we are going to have an unusual Spring season due to the pandemic. While the Missouri girls are beginning practice today under the MSHSAA Standardized calendar, things are a bit different on the East side. High School Soccer Returns
Here’s the basics, I’ll explore the details below
|Sport||Preseason||Practices||Season End||Post Season|
|IL Boys Soccer||March 1||7 dates||April 17||No State Series|
|IL Girls Soccer||April 5||7 dates||June 19||TBD|
|MO Girls Soccer||March 1||14 dates||May 15||June 4-5 (STL)|
|MO Boys Soccer||March 1||14 dates||May 1||TBD|
Starting on the Eastside, there are two different Spring seasons – the boys began practice today but the girls season will not begin until mid-April as the boys season ends. The Alton Telegraph offered a look today
The Illinois High School Association, in its attempts to fit as many prep sports seasons as possible after delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, moved boys soccer from last fall to this spring and in turn moved girls soccer to a new “summer” season, which will begin in late May.
The first games for all teams can be played after they have had seven practices. The season is scheduled to end April 17. There will be no state soccer postseason soccer series.
The first games of the season begin next week. The Telegraph article mentions many of them and the STLHSSports scoreboard shows Althoff v Gibault on Monday with Edwardsville v Collinsville happening Tuesday next week.
More information on the Illinois schedules can be found on the IHSA Covid Page where details on the schedule include the fact that currently, schools can compete against other schools within their region but we likely won’t see visits to or from Springfield, Quincy and other areas that routinely compete here. For Girls soccer, it is recommended that they avoid scheduling regular season games after May 31st in order to allow open dates for potential postseason events. That will likely be driven by changes to pandemic status which drives the limited travel options now. Again, refer to the Covid-19 page linked above. Finally, since the region is in what is known as Phase 4, there is a Maximum of 50 spectators allowed at games which will likely lead to the home teams limiting attendance to family and friends of their players with no visiting fans allowed. Check with the schools to confirm.
With IL Region 4 officially reentering Phase 4 of the state's COVID-19 reopening plan, @KahokAthletics released updated spectator guidelines. Follow Kahok Athletics and @KahokSportsNet on social media for news and streaming information. #thekahokway #kahoksneverstop pic.twitter.com/3HJ8K3HGUH

High School Soccer Returns
In September, schools had to notify MSHSAA if the Boys soccer programs were going to compete in the Fall or they could opt for an Alternate Fall season. That then locked them out of the Fall post-season but for St. Louis City schools in particular, and many St. Louis County programs, the pandemic limitations essentially forced them to either cancel the sport for the year or move to the Spring. The list of programs playing this Spring is below. There is no certainty of a post-season at this point and it should be noted there are other sports affected. You can see the list of schools, sports and the programs they moved at MSHSAA.org I only see one team from outside the region (Barstow) so if there were a post-season, I would suspect it would be held locally.
The girls season is moving along on the standard schedule listed in the MSHSAA handbook (see page 2 for the standardized calendar) that shows practice beginning today and first games Friday March 19.
The first Missouri boys matches I have identified thus far begin Friday March 12th with Brentwood hosting Maplewood and Valley Park hosting Bayless. Girls games will begin Friday March 19 and I see Marquette hosting Howell Central and Orchard Farm hosting Liberty that day. As for Classification and District assignments, I have not heard any details. I suspect we may see something before the girls begin play but that’s only a guess on my part. If you have updates, contact Ole and I’ll include them in this report.

“Each practice is an opportunity.
I should've done a better job of preparing myself for that opportunity, instead of treating some practices as “just another day.”
It seems like such a small thing, but it’s a big thing.
It’s a mental thing.
It’s a toughness thing.”
