The second match on Sunday as SLSG Missouri hosted Libertyville FC 1974 in four matches (U15-U19) featured the U16 boys who entered the game atop the table after their two opening matches, wins over JB Marine and Lou Fusz Critchley. For Libertyville FC, it was the opening game of the short season. 2005 MWC: SLSG Elite v Libertyville FC 1974

I caught the U15 and U16 JB Marine teams last week as they hosted SC Wave Juniors and one sentiment I came away with after Sunday’s match was how big a leap there was between the two age groups, tied to the physical growth they have experienced. It made for a dramatically different game in both cases with the 16’s pace and physicality standing out. A conversation with Coach Terry Michler on Saturday while observing the St. Louis City SC Academy tryouts stood out as we identified the U16’s when winning becomes important while development should still take precedence prior to that point.
The Elite boys were lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Tanner Anderson (Quincy Notre Dame) up top. In the defensive midfield, #12 Akil Dickerson (Burroughs) was paired with #5 and I was impressed with how well they worked together (as seen in the photo above). Akil played as an 8 while #5 was more of a 6 and was one of the players who was on for the full 80 with good defensive skills and patience on the ball. Akil was a winger later in the game but as you can see in the video below, I think he’s got some good chops in the middle.
Elite lost 1-2 after opening the scoring in the 27th minute (video below). The play started with center back starting sending a simple ball up to Dickerson who turned and sent #3 Lillard down the wing where he combined with Anderson after beating the defender along the endline. Good stuff.
Libertyville tied the score 14 minutes into the second half (54th minute) when a into the box was won the the forward built like Denny Vaninger who muscled off the defender before slotting his shot from in the box just inside the near post. SLSG responded to this midway through the half by going to a 4-1-3-2 leaving #5 in his 6 role, chasing the win and retaining their lead at the top of the table.
The remain in first but now tied with SC Wave following the loss that came on a stoppage time goal. A free kick into the box was initially parried by the SLSG GK but a Libertyville player was first to the loose ball and headed it into what was essentially an empty net.
No more home games. The team will play four games over the next two weekends. Time to reset and keep their position.
