The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong series of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age brackets as teams earn their way from the top teams in their state to the regional championship tournaments. Eight teams in each age group (U13-U19) qualify by either winning their Midwest Regional title or via National League. The SLSG 2004 Elite boys qualified in March by winning their National League group. THey went on to win Missouri State Cup but didn’t get out of their group at the Midwest Regional. The SLSG 2002 Elite boys also qualified in March, won the State Cup title and lost in the Regional Final in double overtime. For the Sporting STL 2004 girls, a wildcard invitation to the Midwest Regionals came as a result of their group title in the Club v Club division of the Midwest Conference. They went on to capture the Midwest Regional title with five straight wins and advance to the NCS this week as a result. Three Open USYS National Championship Play Tuesday
There are two brackets of four teams competing in each age group and the top 2 teams in each bracket will advance to the semifinals on Saturday. The eight teams consist of four National League winners and four Regional winners. USYS used to identify how teams advanced by adding a suffix to the team name but they seem to have dropped that this year (along with not providing individual team pages that included rosters). Using the U19/20 mens bracket as an example there are two Florida teams, thus one was the South Regional champion and the other a National League winner. Two Midwestern teams, we know SLSG 2002 Elite were National League winners and thus Chicago FC United the Midwest Regional Champions. That’s an easy one because the two teams battled to a two overtime match that Midwest United ultimately won here in St. Louis. They are in different brackets so the possibility of a rematch will come in the knockout stage once again.
Live Video streams will be available for select games. Visit the USYS YouTube page which shows links for games based upon the Field being played on. I’ve provided links below for the St. Louis teams who are competing within their information section and I’ve added the games to my Soccer on TV calendar. SLSG 2002 Elite can be seen on Wednesday while both SLSG 2004 Elite and Sporting STL 2004 can be seen on Thursday. I’ll add streams for the knockout stage as well to the TV calendar.
So, let’s look at the three competitors now. I’ve included a link to the GotSoccer schedule for each team so you can reference it easily (also included in the Club calendar) and you’ll find the LIVE STREAM link in their schedule notes. I’m working on current rosters, if you can share that detail contact Ole and we’ll all benefit. This page will be live throughout the event so bookmark it and come back for the latest information. SLSG 2004 Elite
It’s a return to the USYS NCS for SLSG 2004 Elite. You may recall the team won the 13U Boys National Championship back in 2017. A lot has changed in youth soccer since then with the Academy in particular pulling players from this team but I’ll see if I can identify anyone that remains. Feel free to chime in parents.
A reminder: SLSG announced that the Elite boys would play in the ECNL beginning with the 2021-2022 season. Given the overlap in the playoffs, it’s hard to see them playing in USYS as well so this could well be their last dance at the NCS
A story on the Germantown Legends
|Jul 20||7:00||Germantown Legends Black (TN)||0-5|
|Jul 21||11:00||New England Surf Grey (MA)||0-1|
|Jul 22||11:00||PA Dominion FC (PA-E)||2-3|
TUE: SLSG was down 0-1 at halftime before Legends blitzed them with four more in the second half
WED: A narrow loss but it effectively ends Gallagher’s opportunity to advance with two losses. They face PA Dominion and a win would tie them with Germantown for points (3) assuming NE Surf defeat them Thursday. Germantown advances however due to the head-to-head tiebreaker in that case.
